ANYONE EVER FAIL TO BOOT DUE TO MISSING FILE IN C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\SYSTEMced??? in WIN2K

This happens to me about week or 2 after install or
sometimes right after install.
could it be my hard drive? or my OS?
IN WIN2K

All I can say is I don't have any SYSTEMced file of any type exe, dll, etc. on my machine and it boots just fine. You probably have some hardware device that uses this file someway. You might try searching the registry for "systemced" to see how it is being used once your system does boot.

let me guess, your using

abit kt7 raid,
maxtor / western digital ata 100 drives...

this issue is becoming one of the biggest problems with this board / disk combination. I am having the same problems. Relates to the 2mb write cache on the disk being unable to write its contents to the disk before ACPI pulls the power on the hardware, causing corruption to windows registry data. Basically the machine is too fast as the cpu finishes the shutdown procedure before the harddrive can flush the contents of its writeback cache to the hard disk. If your running win 9X / ME then you can get an ide cache fix from the windows 98 update site at microsoft. So far, MS dont think this happens with win 2K so theres no fix for it. The only way around is to disable ACPI which is only possible after you hack the system bios, which is VERY VERY tricky and then perform a fresh install.

I've tried it, it works but its not for the faint hearted as you could knacker your system bios. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Theres much more to this at the www.apushardware.com forums but they're down right now, so you wont be able to get to it.. stay posted, and i'll update a link when they're back up again..

Hope this helps

Dude thanks for the info.
I think that is the best explanation i heard today.
I do not have a ABIT KT7 but a motherboard from DELL.
but the Hard Drive i am using is a maxtar ata/100
but my controller card is a ata/66. I am hoping that this is the answer
because this is the second hard drive i have replaced.
I was like why am i keep getting halted at boot time.
with files missing??.
but this explanation seems to make sense. i think 🙂
but thanks.

glad that it helped... if your not using the kt7 mobo, you may me able to disable acpi in your mobo bios, without all that messing with hacking the mobo bios manually. Then perform a fresh win2k install, and in control panel, power, apm tab enable apm if it isnt already, then you'll have a pretty stable install. That way win2k will install as a regular pc without power management and wont shut down your hard drive before it has a chance to write its changes, so you wont get corruption. The enabling apm will make win2k shut the machine down properly for you, so you dont get corruption and you also wont have to manually switch the pc off. Stay posted and i'll post that link i mentioned earlier, if your interested.

Cheers

If your going to reload Win2k I suggest using the STANDARD PC configuration. During the Install from the CD when setup asks you to hit F6 to load custom drivers hold down the F5 key for ten seconds. You'll get a menu, select Standard PC and hit enter. Now just continue with your install as normal.

This will disable ACPI permanently. Also, your PC will run faster.

quick question about that - disabling acpi, should mean that i can use apm? ... right?.. i have disabled acpi at the bios level and installed win2k at as a standard pc. now the machine doesnt power itself off - i hear that i should be able to enalb eapm at the os level in control panel / apm tab.. but i dont get that tab... what now!! anybody know enough about apm to tell me why?..

just a question...

cheers all..

I had the same problems as WindBoy2000 using a BE6-2 and a WD 20.5BA as my secondary master running Win2K Pro.

ummm, I don't have that problem. I never shut down my computer. SOrry. Do a search in the forum for Win2k tips and tricks. There was a huge thread with all kinds of tricks. I believe one trick was to enable that auto-poweroff feature your talking about.

That same error happened to me when I pushed my new P3 850 to 1054MHz @ 124MHz FSB. Reduced the speed, error went away.

seetanbomb - thanks i will try searching... but do you have a link to the win2k tips and tricks forum? Not been there before.

Thanks

I have... and it didn't work. Didn't know about this thread until today. Here's another thread that I started that details my problems.

http://forums2.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=34&threadid=305937

How did I find it today? Well I was looking over my old problem, because this freaking problem just started. My computer won't load now because of some file:

\systemroot\system32\config\software

I'm guessing that's part of the registry... now could that problem be because of that APCI problem? Perhaps my computer shut down the harddrive before it could finish writing some stuff to the registry? Since I haven't had anymore problems with SYSTEMced, I'm not sure if I should do all that ACPI stuff...

yep - thats the other error message you get in this situation. I experienced both the SYSTEMced and the registry corruption problems. Since i performed the fix mentioned above, i've been running win2k completely stable - over a six weeks i think....

try the fix, ( disable acpi ) it'll resolve your problem

Steelo or anyone please help! ASAP

I noticed the past few days after shutting down my computer then the next day powering it up the next day it wanted to run some type of scandisk like the computer wasnt shut down properly. When knowing I was shutting it down properly. Anyways I figured no big deal then last night I get the message: Missing Corrupt in \WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMced when trying to boot into Windows 2000. I tried doing a repair and fixing the file but NO luck! :| So today I started doing a freash install of Windows 2000, which Im in the middle of doing right now. I decided to get on my other computer a do some research and now I find this post. Can someone tell me excatly what I need to do here to fix this problem? Right now Windows is reloading on my other PC, but Im not going any farther incase I need to reinstalling it again.

Im running a Duron 600 on a A7T Pro2-A board. With a Maxtor 20 GIG H/D. It seems Im having the same problems as the rest you you guys. But dont fully understand what I need to do to fix this problem 🙁 The sooner someone lets me know the better so I can get my main system back up and running stable!

BTW..My e-mail is down please post here ASAP!
Thank!
Mike

Check this thread that Steelo posted above
http://www.apushardware.com/vb/showthread.php?threadid=263

Basically, when Win2K first reboots before it really installs anything, that blue screen where on the bottom it says to press F6 to load third party drivers, press and hold F5, then choose STANDARD PC, your os will then install with no ACPI turned on... Steelo and others have turned it back on under Win2K's APM, but I haven't had the guts to do so yet...

Goodluck.

what does this even do the ACPI? Do you loose system preformance when disabling it when doing a fresh install? Which it looks like I'll need to do again tonight. Because I just did a reguler install just now. It seems I need to do this press F5 and do a standard PC install. All I can say is this SUCKS!

Instead of hacking into the BIOS to disable ACPI, this disables ACPI on the OS level. I don't think it should affect performance, more than anything, without any power constraints it should improve performance...

Yeah, ain't formats a b!tch? I came close to going back to Win98SE. Thankfully I found the answer to my problems before I reached that point. Now reinstalling dual boots are even more of a b!tch!!!

Well the odd thing is Ive been running Windows 2000 for a few months and out of NO were this happens. I use to run a duel boot with 98 and 2000 but I kept having to many problems. So a few months back I went stricky with 2000. Until now I really loved windows 2000! When I talked to you last I was just finishing up reinstalling Windows 2000. Ive did a few cold boots and installing drivers, service packs...well you know the story! 😉 What I dont get is why it all of a sudden happened to me, when this seems to happen to others everytime they shutdown and rebooted. I got a copy of Ghost 2001 and I think Im going to just make a backup copy of my H/D incase it gos down again. Of course this wont fix my problem getting his resolved but I will beable to go back and retrieve files,e-mails ect.. Im hoping a fix comes out soon or I just had bad luck! If I could just found a way to manually shut down my PC instead of going the LONG route and reinstalling and do the F5 setup. Im trying to figure out now if some how the Soft-Off by Power-Button would help some how. But dont know yet how it works in my bios.

Think I should atleast disable ACPI in my bios? I think I have the option. After this Service Packs finishing on the other PC Ill double check it.

Thanks, dcdomain

Buck
