I moved down to Virginia from Michigan in August, and since then have been using OTA to get tv. I'm having less and less luck the worse the weather gets (old building, have to point through 2 neighbors' apartments to find direction of the stations) and I'm contemplating DirecTV.

The only problem is their 12-24 month agreement...I'm most definitely not living in this apartment after next August (picking an apartment during a 3 day interview fest is NOT good for more than a year) and so I'm not sure if my next apartment will have a south-facing viewpoint.

I read that they could charge up to $480 if I cancel early, but what if I move and I literally CAN'T get their service there? Has anyone had this experience?

/me wants DirecTV with $100 back from them and $50 back from Costco but won't do it if they charge up the wazoo.

Haven't called yet, figured I'd ask here first. Go go ATOT knowledge base.

If you move they'll "help" you move. Oh and its a 24 month agreement not 12. Its 12 months @ a certain price. But its 24 months.

I believe that they'll let you out of your agreement if you absolutely are unable to get a signal.

Very few people have faced such a situation and you're unlikely to have many know the exact methods.

you should visit dbstalk.com

someone there might've encountered a situation no way of getting a signal.

I believe if you can't get a certain signal strength they'll let you out of it.

Why not just go with the local cable company until you move (I know hell...)

BTW if you do get directv and want the $100 referred credit on top of the other offers PM me...

Personally, I hate paying for TV. Have you looked into other antennas?

I got this one at Radio Shack. It works OK, even indoors, as long as the two little wires inside stay soldered.

Or you could try making your own. Here's one that looks interesting, though I haven't tried any.

It's 24 months, and the ETF is $20/month for however many months you have left. So if you keep it until next August, you'll have about a $300 ETF.

I say try getting a better antenna. Radio Shack's return policy is great. I tried and returned a few different antennas before getting one that worked well.

Edit: I had DirecTV and loved it, but hated paying so much. Now I'm on OTA and what I can find on the internet and love that and the $80 savings every month as well.
