i live on a road that has no cable internet, all I get is crappy Sprint DSL, its alright I guess, but I would like something faster and cheaper...my only other option would be to ask a person that lives up on the main road if they would be willing to split the cost of the internet bill and let me shoot it to my house over a wireless link. I just have no idea how to go about asking this, kind of a weird request...

I am confident that I could pull this off, the house I have in mind is a 100% clear line of site approximately 1 mile away. I was reading that the cantennas should be able to pull off atleast 10 miles with 802.11b. I would be using 2 linksys wrt54g routers with either sveasoft or dd-wrt firmware to increase the signal even further.

Good luck w/that. Many n00bs are very distrustful of others using their intarw3b because of all the "E-crime" and "identity theft" stories they see/read in the news. Many non-n00bs realize that allowing someone to share their internet that way makes them responsible for everything that the other person does with it - run a warez server, d.l kiddie porn, go hacking, send spam, etc.

My question is how do you know this house a mile away already has internet? Or is your plan to talk them into getting internet? Kind of an odd situation, as it would really suck that the internet is so much faster just a mile away that you'd resort to something like this.

I wouldn't find it odd if someone asked me to do this, but I am familiar with what you're trying to do, and I know you can't really get "caught" doing it or even get in trouble really. People not in the know might not be so open to the idea.

how do you determine who pays more? what if one person continuously bittorrent 24/7 with unlimited upload and play internet games? how would you split the bandwidth?

I've been emailing the cable company to see if they have any plans what so ever about running it down our road. The chances I could convince the 1 house I can see to do this is slim to none, I just wish I knew them then it would be easier.

As far as splitting costs about who uses it more, I would talk to them about it....but I lived with 3 other guys last semester in an apartment with the same internet and one of them was always downloading music, movies, whatever, and it never really seemed terribly slow.

1 other reason I would love to move to this company is that I have never heard of anyone getting a letter from them about p2p downloads, not that I do it extremely often, but I liked having that little extra comfort. I think the reason they dont really send letters is because its a college town and most everyone has them as thier ISP, so they would be sending out quite a few letters to people.

But anyway, I realize I will probably not even attempt this, but maybe if someone else has managed to get this done I would have more ambition to try to get it done.

I wouldn't bother the deal with your neighbor. The connection would be crappy at best. The technology really isn't good enough to have a decent connection over that distance without significant packet loss. You'd lose so much that it'd dog your connection down to nothing.
