anyone ever buy/use a degausser?

I need to come up with a procedure here on secure destruction of old media (hard drives, backup tapes, flash drives). Before I would just smash stuff with a hammer. Apparently that?s not good enough. So I?m looking at degaussers. Anyone use them, do they work? What are some possible other options?
Iron Mountain has already said they can?t destroy drives due to environmental crap.

I have a big pile now, but I usually only get one or two bad drives a week.
That one will erase scsi hard drives?

drives are drives.. the first one has 4350 oe.. should be able to take care of everything..

newer higher density drive may require higher than 4000oe

The college radio station I work at has bulk erasers that we use to bulk erase tape cartridges. I haven't measured one but I'm sure it puts out whomping amounts of EMR while you press the button. It realigns all the little magnetic dipoles on the tape. If you don't do it well enough, you can sometimes still make out some elements or the original recording. I have no experience of using it with a HD or floppy disk, but I imagine that doing so would render them useless, possibly impossible to format. A flash drive is optical, and is another matter.

once u get one, u can start ur own degauss business... like degauss tapes for ur local place.. charge like a few bucks and in a few hundred tapes.. u make back the money for the unit..

also get rid of ur own home made movies

I use the #32 3x2" one of these. Just need to get it withing about 6" and you're done almost instantly.
