Anyone ever buy a car through Costco?

If you have, I'm just curious about your experience. How good of a deal did you get? Hassle free? And, of course, if you needed a new car right now would you buy it from Costco again?

My experience was that they send you to a local dealer and this dealer is supposed to give you a good quote.

The dealer that Costco recommended had the highest price of the 5 that I visited.

This may be the exception.

Yep, this is generally how it works.

When you call the Costco car buying number, they give you the name/number of one or two dealers in your area. You both get an e-mail with a number. This number identifies you as a Costco participant. Dealership gives you a price. You agree or you go somewhere else.

The bids I got were competitive but farther away than my preferred dealer (I'm in Cleveland, they gave me dealers in Akron & Cinci).

I used the Akron price at my preferred dealer in negotiations. In the end, the Costco dealer's price helped me, but I didn't buy it from that dealership.

It's really just a referral service which is supposed to net you a better price.

I did, and it turned out to be a damn circus. We spent four hours at the dealership, I heard the finance manager throw a tantrum and use the F-word about a half dozen times, had them mess up the original loan because they failed to spell out the terms of the loan and we had to secure another loan after we had been in possession of the car after a good 3 weeks (think they broke state law on that one), had another finance manager hang up on me, etc. They ended up giving us a good 300 bucks worth of free car accessories to try to apologize for the ordeal. It wasn't Costco's fault, the dealership I dealt with was really fvcked up and as a result of our experience, they are in trouble with Costco. Two months later, their finance department is STILL fvcking with our car purchase. Just yesterday, we found out that somebody paid off our car loan and we apparently have the title coming in the mail any day now. We've made ONE payment on a 15k auto loan. :Q Somehow, the dealership's finance department must've farked up and returned the money to Capital One (the auto lender that Costco hooks you up with.) That's just a guess, we don't know who it was for sure, yet. Someone from the dealership will probably do an audit and come after us for the money like it was our fault. We intend to pay, we don't expect a free car, but they'd better make it worth my while for them messing up an auto loan that we secured on our own. Grrr.

Overall, I don't fault Costco. The process SHOULD have been a breeze. I'm guessing this dealership lost their tie to Costco.

I just bought a new car in Feb, I used Costco and GM employee discount. It turns out that the costco discount brings sthe price down to wholesale, my Gm discount ended up saving me a lot more than wholesale.

thanks for the replies. It sounds like they just offer a set discounted price that you can either take or use to negotiate with. Anymore experiences?

I did last summer when I was shopping for a Nissan Murano. The Costco dealer came in ~500 below any of the other quotes I got.
