Anyone ever buy a broken PS3 on ebay for repair?

There is a few PS3's on ebay with a disc read error message. The laser probably went out as it seems it is a common problem with them. Anyone ever buy one of these PS3's and replace the laser yourself? A broken PS3 is about $30 and the laser about $50.

Any info would be nice.

A Blu-Ray laser only runs $50? I thought that was one of the more expensive parts of the PS3 system. I haven't tried it myself but if its fairly simple to do I would be pretty darn tempted to do it.

When it first came into production it was, not sure if it's the most expensive part now. But, if your PS3 is already out of Warranty then give it a shot. Then tell us what the experience was =D

I guess the question is, how do you know for sure the only problem is the laser ... if bid on it and win and replace the laser and something else is wrong, then you're out about $100?

Yeah, that is true. Should bring it to a local game store for diagnosis first before dropping money on anything.

PS2 lasers are easy enough to replace - just usually not worth the cost of it since good lasers are hard to find.

That depends if its under warranty since I would think anybody eBaying a broken one would likely have an out of warranty unit for one reason or another. It may still be feasible to do and pay what Sony charges to fix the out of warranty unit. This may or may not be worth your while dependent upon what Sony charges. If you get a PS3 off eBay broken for say $50 and Sony charges around $100 to fix the unit then you got a good deal. Too much more than that and you're venturing into the territory where you could've bought a working used unit for around the same price.

IIRC, Sony charges $100-$125 to fix an out of warranty unit.
