Anyone ever Build a Carport?

I helped my neighbor build one for me 🙂. He spent his vacation week doing it for me - helluva guy. What do you need to know? Mine is only closed on one side and is quite high (12 feet on one end, 9 on the other - sloped driveway) to accommodate our conversion van. IIRC, it was about $800 in materials, and I built him a computer for his labor.

What do you need to know?

Are you going to attach it to the side of your house or build a standalone?

I built one attached to the house. Quite simple, really.

I looked into it, maybe some of the stuff I ran into will be useful insight for you.

If I were to follow code I'd have no back yard. The city requires a 20' driveway from the property line, which happens to be 10' into my yard because there is no sidewalk. Terminating the 30' of concretr would be the parking area.. aka carport. I had it all planned out too. There's diagrams online, you can adapt stuff meant for agriculture if there's nothing exactly like you want.

Also, if it's attached I'd have to tear out my siding and make it all fire resistant. Same goes for my shed, it's in a far corner of my yard because if it was up against the house it would be a fire danger.

My lot is ~ 40 feet wide and hundred some feet long. My garage is at the back of the property 4 feet from the alley.

So if Im in the city Im probably gonna have to get approval and code, and bleh? hehe, sounds like more work than it might be worth.
