Anyone ever breathed in HALON before?

HALON went off in the data center shortly before I got to work... I walked into the data center... instantly felt dizzy, lightheaded, and when I announced I was leaving and that there was no way in hell I was going to work under those conditions... I sounded just like Barry White...

Oh and btw... does anyone know of any hazardous lingering effects from the stuff?

I expect you'll be dead shortly.
Can I have your stuff? I've been like a brother to you, after all.

I thought you weren't supposed to be in the same room as that stuff without breathing gear on?

Isn't reverse helium, muileh, not halon?

...yes, lame, I know.

tweakmm:
From Wiki -- "This is a volatile extinguishant that should be used only with a breathing apparatus (when volume exceeds 5%). In higher concentrations it causes giddiness and mildly impaired perception."

So, in short, yes.

Or it might be the fact you were breathing in a toxic gas...

Why was the halon on and why were you allowed into work?

I think the realistic answer to that question is... sometimes... people are morons

The Barry White voice thing was interesting... but I really was feeling rapidly terrible... so I didnt have any desire to keep breathing, much less talking.

This sounds like a good reason to file a lawsuit?
Was it business as usual at the data center when you left? Did anyone realise that halon is not good for humans?

This really blows my mind honestly.
You need to explain more, was the halon system actually on or had it been on earlier and they were in the process of clearing it out of the room?

Not sure why it went off in the first place... but this data center has been having some overall infrastructure issues... last friday the whole center went dark complete power cut.. generators failed... everything went down.

Today, when I arrived they were in the process of cleaning up, but my escort whisked us right into the room while explaining what had happened real non-chalant like it was no big deal. Outside of the center there were a bunch of people sitting around... and they looked at us like we were nuts as we went in.

At that point I knew something was amiss... and we didnt make it more than 5-6 steps inside before I demanded(in my Barry White voice) we leave immediately. I think these people were just plain old clueless... I do think that the danger had really passed by the time we went in... otherwise I probably wouldnt be here typing this post.

But yes.. pretty fcking stupid situation overall.

if I could sound like Barry White, at the risk of causing bodily damage, I dunno... I've see concert footage of Barry White, females threw their panties up on stage like it was nothing. If the side effect is a bad headache, I might try it. If it's like "you will loose a testical" I wouldn't :)

Not to make light of your situation but that image is hillarious.

Admittedly I don't know much about halon, but it seems like if there was enough to cause drastic voice change, headache and dizziness within seconds the concentration in the air was probably a good bit higher than the accepted safe level.

Sounds like lawsuit time to me.

Makes sense as it's used for the opposite purpose...kinda :)
How do you figure?

Uh...halon is used as an extinguishant while one of helium's many uses are as a component in rocket fuel?
I did not know helium was used in rocket fuel.
Hence the confusion.

My fault entirely, as it's a bit of a stretch...

Actually, it's a huge stretch ;)
