Have you ever purchased a stand by flight at an airport counter?

I have heard you can do this and get a good price.....anyone any idea how much better the price would be?
 
Standby can save you a considerable amount of money per ticket, but finding a flight with unclaimed seats can be a real kick to the head.
 
I've done it plenty of times, Airtran has their x-fare, which allows students between 18-22 to fly for $69 one way. I just take the earliest flight, and call ahead the day before and ask what flights have openings.
