My wife and I purchased a couch today. It's a nice couch and was fairly expensive ($2335 after taxes and delivery).

They offered some protection plan along with it, for an additional $299.

What it offers is that they spray this coating on the couch that is invisible and can't be felt, that will make spills bead off of it. It also covers ANY kind of damage to the couch for 5 years, whether it's accidental or not (this is what the sales people told us).

As usual I am skeptical about "extended warranties" because a lot of the time they are BS with a buncha hidden terms. But the fact that we spend so much on the couch and want it to stay in great condition, I'm kind of torn with what to do about it.

Here is what the plan offers:

I have a few days to make the decision. But after reading the fine print, as well as googling about it, I think I'm going to pass on it.

Under the area "What is not covered" seems like a perfectly good place for denying warranty for any reason they can think of.

Those things don't cover the usual wear and tear of a couch. Kids jumping on it, dog eating it, wife banging the mailman on it, and your ass cratering it when you are on it guzzling cheap beer.

IMO they're a waste of money. Not sure which one I had for a sofa from Ashley, but I made a claim and they denied it. There was a tear in the fabric in the upper corner and was told it was not covered. The call I made was strange, it seemed like a very unprofessional low budget operation. I had the feeling they would deny every claim.

Leaving aside whether they will even honor any potential claims or not I can't think of any reason in the world why I would need to insure a couch. You insure things you can't afford to lose, not things that can be found for free on the side of the road in a pinch.

Okay thanks for the replies. It sounds like most people are thinking exactly what I am - that it is a waste of money.

My wife bought the Guardian protection for a sofa/loveseat combo we bought several years ago. I suppose it helped a bit...but really wasn't worth the cost. As has already been mentioned, you can spray it with Scotchguard yourself for MUCH less.

We bought the plan for a leather sectional w/electric reclinerss. I'm not sure it was the guardian protection, but it extended the warranty from 1 year to 3 years. With electric recliners, we were more worried that the cylinders and mechanical mechanisms would fail right after the one year warranty. The warranty also included leather cleaner and protector and included any tears, rips, or holes. I believe it cost around $395, but the sectional cost over 6 grand, so that was a small investment.

do you even know what an investment is?

car/pet/life/furniture insurance is not an investment its an expense.

complete scam. If it gets any stains they try to make you ship your couch back to the factory to clean it.
