Anyone ever bought a chick?

I was thinking I could buy a young chick, and raise him/her to slaughtering age, at which point I would consume its flesh. Anyone ever done this? How complicated would it be?

I live in the suburbs, so I can't get a cow. I was thinking I could keep a chicken though in a big cage in some room in the house, and maybe take him for walks or something.

I've done it before, raised chickens in my apartment for eggs and they eventually meat. It can get quite bloody though when you kill them, so make sure you have the proper equipment so you dont' get blood all over the damn place.

a few hundred dollars? not even. but i agree i don't think all the time and effort he would put into it would be worht it.

not only would he have to feed it, he would have to clean the cage etc, get it excercise and thenbuthcer it.

at least out here i can just build a pen for it and leave it alone until i get ready to eat it. easy enough to butcher here.

Chickens are nasty creatures to raise, and unless you raise a bunch its not worth the effort. Definately not in a dwelling that would just be nasty x10. If your out in the country build a coop and get a dozen hens and a rooster and get busy

I hatched and raised chickens. Must have sucked at it though, cause half of them got sick and died. The rest I gave away after they grew up. Too much hassle to kill them and what not when I can just go to the supermarket...

yeah i been told the same.

raising 1 would nto be worth the money. not with all the cleaning etc you would have to do.

i have also been looking into getting a turkey or two. sigh if i do all the stuff i want im going to have to buy a bigger place heh

Eh, I guess not then. Dammit, I'm trying to think of something to do, can't come up with anything though. Too bad you can't eat cats, ours have been fed and cleaned up after for years, might as well get something in return.

I used to visit my grandparents farm..and help him feed, raise, slaughter, pluck, cook chickens. its no big deal.

Though since he died I cant do that anymore so now ive been living in the city for about 7 years now. Only thing i do is go to college and play tennis.

Word of advice..if you go through with it. Slit the throat and hang it upside down to drain the blood " over a large bucket ofcourse.. Don't strangle it first, because if you slit the throat while its alive and hang it the chicken will still move around making the blood drain faster.

I hope no animal cruelty freaks come and reads this. lol
