Anyone ever been to Punta Cana / Dominican Republic?

****Just got back...see my brief review below for those that were interested****

I'm going to Punta Cana with my g/f in April and staying at the Dreams Palm Beach resort. Just wondering if anyone here has ever gone, if there's anything off the resort you might recommend, etc.

The tours are fun. I've never stayed at the one. Bring plenty of dollar bills for tips and they'll treat you good. Hit up a bartender you like early in the trip with a 10 spot and he'll certainly take care of you. Watch out for everybody peddling their stuff, they're friendly but pushy. You can find some neat souvenirs for cheap though, haggling is expected.

"You come to my shop! You buy! Cheapie, cheapie, best quality!"

Just went last month and stayed at the all-inclusive Catalonia Royal Bavaro. Resort was very nice and we thought it was a better experience than other places we went to in Cancun and the Bahamas.

Outside of the resort, we did a day trip that took us to Higuey and some of the countryside in the area. Visited places like a sugar cane plantation, school, church, ranch, and even a rural family. It's a good experience because you can learn a bit about the people and their history/culture/economy. It was well organized and the guide was very helpful and resourceful. Yes, they also take you to go shop for some of the local products like coffee, cigars, Mamajuana (a concoction of rum and herbs), paintings, etc, but we didn't feel that it was too much time spent shopping or that it took away from the trip. Overall, I recommend it if it's the type of trip that you enjoy.

Unfortunately I forgot the name of the company; they had a desk near the reception area of our hotel and that's where we signed up for it.

I've heard of this Mamajuana. A coworker (about 60 yrs old) said he got some when he was there last year and got a hard on for about 3 hrs after he drank it. Luckily, at 26 I don't need some special beverage to become aroused, but I think I might seek out this Mamajuana on my first day there just to see what happens.

Our guide touted it as "liquid viagra"

Stayed at the Palace Punta Cana by RIU. Never left the resort. Had a blast and wish I had stayed more than 3 nights. Next time...

It's a neat buzz. Also cock fighting can be fun to watch. You can also get good vanilla extract for SUPER cheap. We're talking a quart of it for 10 bucks, no telling what that would cost in the states.

You can find it in local shops or likely in the store on the resort.

Barter for everything. I bought a box of cohibas for $30. He was initially asking $120. You don't have to tip a lot, but tip $5-10 right away, even at the all inclusive bars, and they'll give you priority service and strong drinks.

Off resort tours like the safari and whatnot are cool, but if you go during the day you're best off just finding someone who speaks Spanish who wants to go on a tour to, and do it yourselves.

My parents went to an adult's only resort in that area in 2005. They loved it. I can't remember what it was called though. I'll ask them.

Not quite Punta Cana, but I've been to Puerta Plata, and I'd highly recommend some local young girl.

Haven't been there, but post back after you go - we're going to that exact resort for a friend's wedding in August.

Go to one of the vendors and ask him what else he sells. He may mention his many beautiful sisters.

Also, while the dune buggy tour may look exciting it is anything but. Don't get fooled!

HAhahaha, my brother-in-law and father went on this tour, and they were just driving in traffic, and ended up at a hut where they were pressured to purchase artwork for sale.

2 or 3 hours of driving to end up at a souvenir shop. At least they had El Presidente and Brugal offered to them throughout the whole drive.

Thanks for the feedback. It might be a story that ATOT would have enjoyed, but I'll be staying away from any of the locals that are offering their STD-rich bodies.

Booty - I'll try and remember to post again after. I've heard very good things about this particular resort, so I have high hopes. And if you're going there for a wedding, I'm sure they go above and beyond what I will experience (but we did book our room with Preferred Club perks).

Alone - A box of real Cohibas for $30 sounds excellent. When I was in Jamaica with some college friends for spring break (5-6 years ago), we got a box for $80. Back then we were young and foolish enough that someone I was with brought them back to the US. Unfortunately, the silghtly older and somewhat wiser me probably won't be willing to take that same risk of bringing them through customs.

Spidey - Vanilla extract for $10 a quart is INSANE. I'm guessing vanilla is one of DR's big cash crops...

We booked this vacation back in late September, and now that we're past the holidays, it's giving me something to look forward to. Hopefully there isn't a massive earthquake on the DR side of the island before then...Haiti got rocked :\

Just got back yesterday. This resort was really nice and I would definitely go back again.

Booty - there was a wedding every day, and I talked to one of the people that works there and organizes the weddings...they work hard to make sure it's exactly how the bride and groom want it. While you're there for your friends' wedding, if you and the misses want to have a nice dinner alone, they offer a private dinner for two on the beach. It costs between $150 and 180 (depending on your wine choice), and you pick from a menu of delicious food that you can't get at the restaurants on the resort. Might seem pricey after you've already paid a lot for all-inclusive, but the food was outstanding. For my entree, I had Surf and Turf (Lobster and Filet Mignon)...I'm from New England, and I've never seen a Lobster this big before, and the Filet was cooked perfectly. The deserts were very impressive...made by a very well-trained pastry chef. We ordered "apple pie" and "cheese cake" off the menu...but there was no "pie" or "cake" to be had. The apple and cheese fillings were served in chocolate shells that you would expect to see on some Food Network desert competition.

The food was excellent, the drinks came fast, the beach and resort grounds were beautiful, the staff was very friendly and they did everything you could ask for to make sure we had a great week.

As for Mamajuana...didn't have the viagra effect at all. It kind of tastes like jagermeister, which I'm not a fan of. I drank plenty of it anyways...When In Rome...

When we were booking, Dreams Palm Beach was one of the more pricey resorts in Punta Cana, but we walked the beach past some other places and none of them compared to what we had.

hey, so that's what my sister and her husband brought back from teh DR for me. a little bottle of mamajuana packaged with 2 cigars. at least now i know what the F it is. lol.

i've been to Puerto Plata... 1997 or something, maybe 1998. went with a girlfriend even though i knew we were breaking up. lol, sex marathon.

You can save that bottle (with all the roots inside it) when it's empty and make your own mamajuana with it. From what the bar tender at the resort told me, the drink is a combination of Red Wine, Honey, and Rum. I asked him how much wine vs honey vs rum, but he just said "little bit of this, little bit of that, until you like the taste". He told me to mix it, let it sit in the bottle for at least 2 days before drinking, and always shake it up good before pouring a shot. I just don't know how long that same bottle of roots is OK to use...1 year? 5 years? 10 years? Who knows...
