How is the area? Are there a lot of things to do? I might be up there for 6 months and I know nothing about the city.

Edit: If you have, feel free to provide more elaborate responses.

Hot and dry in the summer. Not too far from the farms that allow you to pick fruits and vegetables from the farmers. It is a growing suburb and is about half an hr. to San Jose and 45 minutes to San Francisco.

It's about 45 minutes either way to SJ or SF depending on the time of day. It now has a BART station so you can forgo the traffic altogether. Concord is on that side of the hill. Lots of typical CA activities, water parks, malls etc. Mount Diablo and the East Bay Parks and lakes are good for day trips. You're within a 2- 3 hour drive from the Sierra's and the ski slopes and gold country. Kayaking on the Bay, Fishing in San Pablo Bay & The Delta.
Come spring time, you're close to a LOT of hiking and camping, either packing in or car.
Monterey = 2.5 / 3 hrs.
Muir Woods / Redwoods 2.5 / 3 hrs.

NorCal > just about anywhere else, IMNHO.
