Anyone ever been to carnival in Brazil?

Ive been talking about going with a buddy of mine. We pretty much have to decide now whether or not we are going to go to assure ourselves of getting a room and whatnot. I am wondering if anyone has ever been to carnival in brazil (we are thinking of going to Rio or Salvador). If so, how was it? Also, we are not sure whether we should do a package deal, or just book a hostel and do most of it ourselves.

Any inside knowledge would be greatly appreciated

Bump. and also does anyone know where i could find a cheap flight to brazil for this? i've tried expedia/orbitz/etc and they all come back ridiculously expensive.

try a travel agent. I have found flights cheaper to thailand from travel agents over what I can find on the web.
 
I Wouldnt Consider this. It is a Long a deleyed Process to get a VISA to Brazil. Yes a Visa. They REquire ALL US citizens to get a Visa to enter the Country Because .........We require Brazilians to get Visa's.

Just last week a Judge ruled that every US citizen entering Brazil need to get a Mugshot and Fingerprint taken just like (As of Today) we make their citizens.


I think YOu will be 100% unable to get a Visa before carnival.

Sorry But its the Truth.
