Im thinking of getting a second dog but this time from a shelter. A place in brooklyn posts pictures and a brief description of the dogs on craigslist. I have a few questions:

- I wanted to know how they get a rough estimate of how old the dogs are?
- I would like to take the dog to my vet first to check out the health, etc before I adopt the dog, do they allow this?

My friends mom runs a shelter. They let you take the dog for a few days if you want you need to pay for it, but if it doesn't work out they'll give you your money back. For age they just look and guess same with mixed breeds.

My girlfriend's dog Niky came from a shelter and they knew her age. That is one smart dog too!! VERY smart.

I've gotten two dogs from shelters - one had to be returned within a day because he was such a terror; the second was a puppy who had distemper and we had to put him down. I had excellent luck with adopting a greyhound from the local race track - she was an absolutely fabulous animal with a sweet and gentle disposition. The adoption league at the race track also provides all sorts of perks if you adopt like dirt cheap boarding and health care.

Gotta say go greyhound!

I haven't done so yet but I certainly would to spare them from certain death because nobody adopted them. :( I would never get a dog or cat from the pet store when the shelter is full of animals who need good homes.

They look at the dog's teeth.

Doubtful. The humane society where we got our dog (4 months old) did check the dog out prior to us picking her up and they neutered her as well-this is mandatory where I live. Of course we had to pay for it.

Edit: they also gave the required shots but I can't remember now exactly what those were.

We've had the dog for 5 years now. She's a great dog though. Part black Lab and a few other dogs from the looks of her.

I wouldn't get a dog/cat from a shelter. Usually they are old, busted, and neurotic undesirable animals. Yuck! Get a cute one from the newspaper. :)

When was the last time you were in a shelter?

Agreed.

Shelters are full of a wide range of animals. Young and old. It is a shame that people let their animals breed and then dispose of the unwanted offspring so they can be put to death by a shelter employee. I could never work in one of those places.

All my pets are fixed. We have a cat who is 12 years old, a dog 5 years old and another cat who is 1.5 years old. The latter two were rescued by my wife and I. The 1.5 year old cat was abandoned where I work and one of the girls in the credit department found him outside as she was leaving one night. I decided to take him in. He had fleas but that was pretty much it. He's very affectionate so we know he isn't feral. I had the vet look him over, got his nuts chopped right away and paid for his shots.

I love getting dogs from the shelter. i have had great luck with them! i have got 3 so far. Trouble is they are a little older then ones you buy so they die in a few years :brokenheart: all the dogs we had are dead. But thats ok we are moving and wouldnt want to stress them out.

when we get in the new house we are going to hit the shelter again. My daughter loves dogs. Hopefully they have something that will keep an eye on her. My in-laws had a collie that would fallow and protect my wife's little sister.

I find this hard to believe. Do you have proof?

I have had 3 cats from humane society - 2 of them are/were incredibly great cats - smart/cuddly etc. The 3rd is extra cuddly but not so smart :) When my current cats die, I intent to go right out and adopt more. I would never pay for a cat/dog since so many good ones are nearly free at shelters.

We got our Pom from a shelter. There really wasn't a way to confirm his age.. they just guessed from experience being around dogs. About his health... they apparently did an exam on him already (was only lost for a few days) and he was fine. They let us play with him on the premises for a half hour.

Every animal we have or have had has come from the street or a shelter. Without exception they have all been wonderful pets. I think one way they estimate the age is to look at the teeth.

We have gotten two dogs from the shelter.

The first one was about 2 years when we got him. We didn't know it, but he was sick when we adopted him and we had to put him down about 2 months later.

The second dog we got was just 4-5 months old when we got her. We've had her for about 3 years now, and she is like our child. We love her like crazy.

I would definitely get another dog from the shelter, in spite of our bad luck with the first one. The lesson learned is that you should examine a dog for problems real closely before you decide to adopt.
