Anyone else's Seagate 300gb SATA die?

At first I thought it was my raid controller that messed up the drive. All these bad sectors were appearing and the drive was officially dead, sending in for RMA.

My friend has the same exact drive and it also died in less than a year.

Has anyone else have this problem with this particular drive or are we just unlucky?

The model number is ST3300831AS.

That's a 7200.8, and they weren't very reliable. Send it back to them, and they'll more than likely send you a new 7200.9 or if you're lucky, a 7200.10.

Unfortunately, the 7200.8 was a real dud series for Seagate...even the champ strikes out every once in awhile.

But, you've got that industry-leading 5-year warranty. 🙂 Use it and hopefully they send you a 7200.9 or even .10.

Hope you had backups of anything vital.

I'm getting ready to order 2 or 3 of the 320GB .10's; I can't believe how cheap storage has gotten.

*edit*
Just to make people feel better, I'll tell you this; b/t 2003-2005 I had FIVE WD 120GB IDE drives die on me. Two in my own PC and three in PCs I built for other people. Needless to say, they sure made me look bad. :| I don't buy anything but Seagate SATA anymore.

I've got two of those drives, and they've been going strong for almost 2 years now, been very solid as storage drives.

I've also got a 500GB Seagate, ST3500641AS, drive that I've had since June this year, without any problems.

Precisely, if you back up, Seagate is one of the best companies to receive a dud from. If it goes dead in any of those 5 years, you just send it in for a good one from a newer series. Thats simply terrific IMO!
