Anyone elses parents become ignorant

I just had a heck of a time convincing my mother

A) Hitler was not Communist

B) Communist people are not deported from our country anymore because of their political beliefs

C) The boat found in the mountains by the Black Sea was a Roman merchant ship and not the Ark like the sensationalist media claimed it to be

D) The Civil War was not originally started over slavery but of the right for the south to sell its goods to another country that would pay more instead of to the north

There is really too much to list but take A for example. Do you ever get exasperated with when talking to your parents and trying to explain something to them you thought should be common knowledge.

My dad reads a lot, so with time he is increasinly wise. At least he has been to date. My mother i would say is fairly similar.

you may have typoed increasingly however i still hate/envy you. I hope im not the only one inflicted with such close minded parents.

Also a specialist at my work the other day just went on about how any country built on a bunch of sand cannot be trusted because theyre all oil families and gays and terrorists.

Am I really the only one? Maybe I should get out of Jacksonville FL.

I guess I am one of the lucky ones.

My parents annoy me sometimes... but it's not because they are ignorant. Mom was a math and science teacher and is now a full time volunteer for the Audobon Society... Dad was a fire fighter/paramedic/master carpenter who has always had a lot of common sense.

My god yes. My parents just built a $40000 addition to their house in a neighborhood that was great 20 years ago, but all the old people died and they're now surrounded by rental properties and white trash. When they die I'm going to be stuck with a $150,000 house in a $50000 neighborhood :|

Then my mom's always doing stupid things. She's a pretty sharp lady with money and planning stuff, but a total goodball when she's out of her element. My dad's gotten to be a loud mouth as he gets older....saying bizzare off the cuff ideas whenever there's a lull in the conversation.

10 years ago, they were straight laced normal parents. Wow....aging does that to you. (BTW- they're in their upper 50's).

D) State's rights, in general, right?

The underlying issue was slavery, but the immediate cause was state's rights, etc. DOn't fool yourself into believing that slavery played less than a major role in that war.

It was over the states' rights to regulate slavery - and commerce etc.

I think if we took a poll, more adults than kids would know the correct answer to A. Also, if your mom has made it to whatever ripe old age without knowing that, it's not very important, is it?

My parents still think there are invisible magic people that live in the clouds.

Yeah........wait, are you trying to say there aren't?

no !!!!! man, after all these years ... ! pls tell me you're kidding...

Oh, I forgot this one with my mother-in-law a few months back:

me "You know, you can see Mars really well right now. See that bright reddish light over there?"
her "You can't see Mars! It's a planet...it doesn't give off light!"

I then tried to explain, ask her how she could see the moon...etc. No dice

Thank God I am not alone

About D my point is that she believed that slavery was the ONLY issue.

Yeah D) is a huge misconception to alot of people. When the war first started the Union actually turned back the slaves that ran to their camps.

My mom seems to be getting almost senile at 47, but she has mental "issues," so who knows what role they play in that. Not a very informed person either. I live with her but pretty much can't stand her, so I barely talk to her.

I haven't talked to my dad in about 4 years, but he's a stubborn, often logic-challenged person. He had started to use "the n word" around me shortly before my departure, so the outlook ain't bright. (Guess he thought it was ok to do so at a certain age or something? He didn't use it when I was younger)

And the Emancipation Proclamation freed the slaves in ONLY the Southern States. Union states were allowed to keep their slaves for a few years after it was initiated and pressure was being brough to bear on Lincoln by Northern reformists.

Yes my mom is ignorant.
Especially about radiation stuff, she keeps telling me the radiation from my monitor will kill me.
Then she tells me that if you stand in front of a microwave, the harmful radiation will give you cancer.
Then she says even more ridiculous stuff like it's bad to eat microwaved foods because there is radiation in the food :disgust:

She's not as bad as my grandma though...
