Anyone else's Microsoft Update take 10 minutes?

When i go to Microsoft Update, it takes nearly 10 minutes before its done looking for updates.. Is it this slow for everyone?

nope, actually very little... recently reformatted.

That happens all the time. It will also happen if you haven't done it in a while. I fix computers for a living and on a daily basis I normally have up to five computers all doing Windows Updates. Some computers are quick, some takes quite some time. I honestly don't know what causes it but it happens to computers that have been freshly formatted as well.

There are a lot of contributing factors, speed/latency of the connection, I/O, CPU, applications that are installed, etc.

Generally I see detection take anywhere from ~20 seconds to 2 minutes, depending on the machine. I have on a few occasions (albeit uncommon) seen it take 5+ minutes.

10 minutes seems extreme.

EDIT: Just for the sake of comparison I ran it on my Vista Laptop (slow HD, cable internet, Office 2007, Visual Studio 2005) and it took ~50 seconds.

I see this too, with no rhyme or reason I can determine because sometimes its quick other times excruciatingly slow. Not ten minutes, but so long that I wonder if something's gone wrong.

On XP machines where I've selected to upgrade from Windows Update to Microsoft Update, yes, I've seen VERY long wait times. It seems to increase the more Microsoft products are installed, such as Office.

Any of you having the slowdown issue happen to have used crap cleaner to remove old hotfix uninstallers?

Wasn't too bad yesterday. Under 10 mins to download
but a bit longer to install everything (about 10 updates)

There is a fix for this.

Install hotfix KB927891 and install the WSUS 3 client.
