anyone else's ice bucket turn into an ice glob?

My fridge is a top and bottom and the ice maker dumps the ice into a bucket. After a day or two after I clean it out, all the ice in the bottom turns into one giant glob. Over the course of 2 weeks it will fill up pretty much the whole ice bucket with one giant ice booger.

Anyone else have this or know of a fix?

I thought of that but it already...well freezes everything. Ice cream turns into an ice block real quick.

Or would that be another sign????

Actually I did notice that ice in the freezer actually shrinks over time. Wonder what the science behind that is! Guessing it has to do with the defrost cycle.

Yes, basically the ice is warming up and melting, then re-freezing. Same with the ice cream.

Add a bit of 5w10 to the feed line. It will give each ice-cube a thin, hardly noticeable coating, keeping them from sticking together. Vegetable oils solidify at freezer temps so would not be good for the purpose.

Your freezer should pretty much always be at the lowest possible setting. Alton Brown told me so.

But your freezer doesn't stay at that temperature. It goes through defrost cycles periodically. A defrost cycle should last 15-20 minutes (roughly) and the temperature, I believe, will rise to about (25 degrees?)

Probably have a problem with your defrost thermostat. Else, the defrost timer.


Other possibilities - perhaps the ice maker is leaking a little bit of water as it makes ice or dumps ice? Put down a paper towel between batches of ice. Check it after it makes a batch. That should show if that's the source of your problem.

Also, make sure you have a decent amount of food in the freezer. Less food = more temperature fluctuations during the defrost cycles.
