I was thinking about Rogue One, and I saw a couple of scenes with Han and Lando from the original trilogy the other day, and, combined with the various expanded universe books I'd read, I realized it's a terrible shame all the various adventures that could have played out on screen in a Star Wars TV series (or even just if there had been 3-4 episode mini-series every few years). What a waste!
I realize the EU books are all dead now that Disney de-canonized them, but there will be new books that are canon, and it doesn't have to be those specific stories anyway, the point is that, the movies show the Star Wars Universe at focal points of the most extremely important galactic events, and thus always focused on Jedi or Sith. Given the chance to show a bit beyond those focal points, not focusing on events that would tend to have Jedi or Sith involved, the Star Wars Universe would be a very fun and interesting one. I think it would be infinitely more relatable than, for example, Star Trek, for various reasons:
1. It's unlikely or much less likely that filler episodes in Star Wars would have used goofy time travel plots. The maximum extent of time travel episodes would likely be Jedi or Sith seeing Force-visions of past events, that they can't actually change.
2. High technology would be everywhere, but situations would likely be resolved militarily or diplomatically rather than through some technobabble graviton pulse to disable the enemy ship.
3. Also related to #2, Star Wars either doesn't have teleporters, or if it does it's so low-key I don't realize it. And if they did, Star Wars characters would be more likely to put it to its obvious uses (like beaming bombs onto the enemy ship or beaming attacking soldiers into space).
Just imagine the smuggler and gambling stories that Han and Lando alone could have provided! They still could, but it won't be with the same actors, which is the waste.
Maybe I'm the only one that prefers TV shows over movies, I just prefer character development and long story arcs over action-focused 2 hour movies.
Here's an example idea - in the (again, I know it was killed off from canonicity by Disney) expanded universe, in the years following what was the ROTJ time, a few major smuggler characters of the kind Han probably associated with, actually came into possession of a Star Destroyer. They used it as a sort of...roving base, much friendlier to the general public than pirates, but still, owned by smugglers. I would think a setting like that would be great for a few episodes if not a few seasons...
