Anyone else want to know why they don't make scary movies anymore?

The 70s and 80s ruled for scary movies! They don't really make em anymore... The latest so called "scary" movies were The Ring and 13 Ghosts. Both sucked...

Am I the only one that thinks the scary movies is a lost art?

Yes. There have been some recent scary movies. A favorite of mine was Event Horizon. Also, I actually found The Ring to be very creepy and a great movie...not wicked scary per se, but more creepy.

Another favorite was Jeepers Creepers...

Can't say that I liked Jeepers Creepers much at all.

As for older scary movies, some of the early Freddie Kruger movies and Halloween movies were pretty scary... though some were corny. Maybe it's because I grew up in the 80s? :)

Actually, the Haloween movies were pretty scary. I always liked them better than the Friday the 13th ones or even the Nightmare on Elm Street series. I think it was because Michael Myers always had on that creepy mask and he never, ever ran...or even walked fast. He would come after you with that slow deliberate walk...


I grew up in the 80's too. ;)

I'm not sure if there are any more original horror ideas left. And while the 70's and 80's had lots of horror movies, the vast majority would be considered ultra-cheesy by today's standards.

I agree that 13 Ghosts sucked. It wasn't as bad as FearDotCom, though. (Man, that was a horrible movie!)

I'm surprised you didn't like The Ring... What horror movies do you like?

my favorite old scary movies: the shining , the changling ( <---not that scary but its really good, and its got some parts where you crud yourself)

favorite new movie = the ring

Phantasm is one from the 70's that holds up...it's hard to say now since movies I thought were scary then might not be scary as an adult. I mean, I thought Children of the Corn was scary back then.

13 Ghosts did have a pretty cool house, even if they used CG for much of it.

It's hard to make a good scary movie. Part of the problem is that we've been exposed to pretty much everything as it is; violence/gore can't really be implied, and special effects are so good that disbelief can't be suspended. Event Horizon did a good job in part because at first we weren't really sure what happened to the ship, and as we began to find out they did a great job of instilling a sense of horror in the audience.

Phantasm is a perfect example of a horror movies from years gone by, that wouldn't cut it today.

jaeger, I think you make an excellent point about older movies seeming scarier because we were younger (read: more impressionable) back then.

Salem's Lot and Night of the Living Dead scared me when I was a kid. But both of those movies would seem quite silly in the 21st Century.

Really? I mean as an actual cohesive movie it really isn't very good but I think it has some very creepy moments. Yeah the ball is pure cheese...although again I may just be remembering things different. I haven't seen it in at least 10 years, maybe even at 16 I was impressionable.

Yeah, Phantasm was a good one, and I also liked a couple of the Omen movies. However, like Wingz said, these movies are not even remotely scary by today's standards...well to me anyway.

Good scary movies as in funny, or in scary?

A movie like Misery has the 'advantage' that it is not impossible in the real world, and that makes it scary. Unless it's realistic it doesn't scare me really.
There are enough funny horror c- and b-movies out there, if you just search around a bit. Real classics among them like Army of Darkness are hard to find though nowadays.

I rented that a couple of months ago, and it too had its own cheese factor, but it still wasn't bad. I remember seeing Hellraiser 3 a couple of years ago, and enjoying it. Great quotes: "Do I look like someone who cares about what God thinks?" And of course, flinging CDs into peoples' heads and stuff was classic.

Good movie but really, did anyone ever deserve to die more than Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween? If I was the type who yells at movies I'd have been hoarse by the time that one was over.

Salem's Lot scared the hell out of me when I was a kid. I watched the original televised mini-series in 1979, I was eight years old. My dad wouldn't let me at first but I kept bugging him so he let me. I had nightmares for weeks. :D

Haven't seen it since, but yeah, it would probably be corny today, about like Star Wars.
