Plextor makes some really nice drives, but mostly SCSI. I just bought a 12/10/32 Plextor IDE burner, but burners are the only drives I know of that Plextor makes that run off the IDE interface. Does anyone know if Plextor has any plans to extend their line of drives to IDE interface??? I really hope they do. They could dominate both SCSI and IDE markets, in my mind.

I thought they where making equal amounts of both ide and scsi. I think resellers are probably pushing the scsi model because we, the techie buyers, probably want the best, which in this case is scsi. They probably dont have room to stock both so only stock the more popular.

I asked a Plex support person a while back if they had plans to market any
Atapi "read-only" drives, ie CDROM, DVD/CDROM. He said "not at this time". :D

goldboyd,

I think that's a pretty harsh comparison. Not everyone is a fan of SCSI, because of the price. Personally I love the IDE format, for everything that I do. With the speed of the ATA66 and ATA100 formats on hard drives, unless you're running 4 drives in a SCSI Ultra3 config with 160MB/s capabilities, where is the increase in performance? My kenwood 72x drive does faster DAE than any of the SCSI cd-rom drives, and my burn-proof burner posted higher benchmarks than the SCSI version of the same drive. When you compare price vs. value, SCSI really has no advantages, again, EXCEPT in 4+ HDD configurations.

I'd like to see any DVD ROM drive from Plextor. Last I checked, they didn't make any at all.

We've already got high quality DVD-ROM drives from Pioneer and Toshiba. There wouldent be much plextor could improve.

I use Toshiba DVD drives exclusively. I wouldn't mind seeing one from Plextor though.

I agree with goldboyd. Plextor makes high-end drives, and are very successful at that. They have nothing to prove with the IDE market, so why would they? There is a lot of money in SCSI interface CD-ROM's, especially with Ultra320 coming out, there will be no comparision between that and ATA100 (at least until the new IDE comes out). Besides there are a few high-quality IDE manufactures, most notibly Toshiba and Pioneer. They both make excellent DVD-ROM's.
