Anyone else using ONLY VoIP?

I myself use Packet 8 over my Brighthouse Networks (formerly Time Warner) Cable connection. It's up 99.99% of the time and so is the Packet 8, so I don't feel the need to have any landline or cell. Anyone else like this? What are you using?

My realtor just switched over to VoIP. Their phone systems were basically down the day I was there... I guess as long as you have a good solid connection to the internet, you won't have a problem. There are many bandwidth throttling problems on networks these days...makes me wonder how well it would work...I just haven't played with it yet.

do u have to pay montly also for this VOIP??

do you have a number where people can call u at?

Yes, I pay $20 monthly, and I have a box that connects to my router on one side and either a telephone or a wall jack to go out to my entire house on the other side. Otherwise it works just like a regular phone service with free long distance in the country and all of the basic features like voice mail and caller ID etc...

Is that $20 total, or $20 plus $10 in fees and taxes?

I don't need a land line, but I keep one for incoming calls. I pay for minimum Verizon service, and it's $10... plus $8 in fees and crap. If I could get VoIP direct dial international calling for the $50 flat rate, I'd switch.

I've had Vonage for about a month and it's great... $27/mo including all taxes sure beats what the telco was charging for fewer features... My parents got it the same week I did and they love it too... I have a cell for work but hardly ever use it.

I would like to, but as stated.. the rents wouldn't know what to do if it broke. granted i'll be back home soon for who knows how long...

but i still don't have faith in the uptime of the cable company (comcast). it'll be bound to happen... we'll need it for an emergency and can't use it. granted, both my mom and I have cells. but still.. it doesn't quite site easy w/ me as a replacement yet. we've only had "downtime" on our phone when we had to switch numbers. more than I can say for the outages for comcast....

Got vonage's $15 dollar plan and got a cell phone that doesn't work at the house, thus I don't use much.

i have a question about VOIP... is it a client you run on your PC, or does it run through normal phones?

IE, can you have multiple phones around the house, or must you answer your phone at your PC...

I just use Skype. It is free and doubles as a messaging client.

yeah skype is very very good..

I call my parents in southeast asia using that... too bad u have to be on ur computer

Could you enlighten me on using Skype. I just downloaded it and tried to make a call and it said that calls to public phones or something like that are not free so I was not able to make the call. Someone earlier said that this service was free so am I doing something wrong or did I misinterpret the previous post about Skype. Any information about this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Same story here, except for the part about the parents...

Anyone try the ATT Voip service?

They have a deal at the moment of 19.99 for first 6 months then 34.99 after that, i like the fact that they will transfer my landline phone number over, while my local cable company that offers Voip also won't.

skype is free calls to anyone else running skype. Think of it as IM with voice chatting on beaver steroids. They offer a service that bridges you to the outside POTS lines at really low rates, so you can use it as your phone.

same here. I've used it to make calls to my sister in Orange county. Doesn't sound too bad, and the rate is only 2 cents per minute in the continental united states.

Do any of you know if you switch to voip if you can have your phone number unlisted?

currently we have that so it doesnt come up in the phone book?
