Anyone else think these Olympics are going to suck?

Seriously though, like so many US athletes are suspended for doping up etc., and others don't even want to go (US basketball team.) The construction work is still going on, at an accelerated frantic pace now (safety concerns anyone?) The city infrastructure is poor, with transportation being the worst (did they even finish the new mass transit system?) Random blackouts because of heat are increasingly common, but the Greeks say backup generators will work fine for the Olympics. I don't think any records will be broken, because of the horrible heat and pollution.

Worst of all, I don't think anybody seems to care about these Olympics. Even when they were farther away in Sydney and coverage began at all these crazy times, more people were interested back then.

Oh, and I didn't even mention the possibility of a terrorist threat. I don't know about you, but the Greek police and anti-terror units don't instill much confidence in me...nevermind the problems they have with the Turks and that botched referendum vote in Cyprus.

If only Toronto had won...

I hear al Qaeda is holding their own form of the olympics at the same place. Oji hasif el-mohammed aLa laden hussein has a great shot at the 500 Suicide Bombing.

I usually look forward to the Winter Olympics myself, but that's mainly cause I miss seeing lots of snow.

there is more to the olympics than just US athletes you know

true, but cheering and watching one's own country and its athletes is part of the fun. I like seeing the 100 meter dash...I love watching an American come in first, just as a Russian would love to see Russia come in first.

I have no idea whether the games themselves will suck but I am certain that NBC's coverage of them will.

hahaha so true.

As for this olympics in Athens, it seemed appropriate on the 100th year anniversery of the games i think, unfortunatley after we realized athens wasn't up to standards we didn't move them.. sigh... i'm not going, but i fear for those of you who are.

Oh, that's another point I forgot to bring up! Only like 25% of the tickets are sold!!! WTF??? Nobody wants to go!!!

And the apathy of American athletes wasn't my only point. Its not just that America isn't interested (as is the case with World Cup soccer, cricket etc.) but that NOBODY seems to expect much out of these games!

i used to watch the games way back when i lived in germany...usually i am not a big sports fan...but several tiems it was great and after a few days you got really into it.

Now i live in the us...and i remember the last time when there were games (Sydney ???) there was hardly any coverage...and it doesnt matter where this games are. I think as long as they are not i the US everyone gives a f***k here....and this is kinda sad. (I also dont think that canada would get big of a coverage)

The last really good coverage of the Olympics I recall is when ABC was doing them. They would show a lot of medal ceremonies no matter what country won which was one of the things I really liked.

Sounds more like the US olympic team sucks than anything else ;) I will say that I've not heard of any "hopefuls". A good olympics needs some americans to root for or, if you're in Canada, some canadians to root for, etc. I don't see the yanks pulling for anybody, so the networks here aren't covering it much because they have nobody interesting to talk about.

The Olympics sucks - but not for the reasons you listed.

Because they keep adding lame "sports" like equestrian, synchronized swimming, and dance. What?s next finger painting, cooking, and setting the time on a VCR?

It is also much commercialized and has all pro athletes.

If they kept real sports with definitive standards of measure like, fastest, furthest, longest, highest, goals, ect... and eliminate any even that uses style, costume , and musical score as measures.

I have no confidence that the security will prevent all terrorist activity.
