I'm browsing CarMax and can't help notice how cheap nice SUVs like Yukon Denali and H2 Hummers are now selling for. These vehicles retailed over $50k new and now are selling for 1/3 of the price after 2-3 years. Anyone else tempted or am I the only crazy one?

You're not crazy. I'm VERY tempted and want something to haul/tow things as a second vehicle. If you find a great value then why the hell not?

I'll probably buy a small suv here in the next few months. I really need something for fishing and camping since my GLI is dropped a little bit which makes it difficult to get to a lot of good spots. Also, it's a PITA to deflate/inflate/and haul my float tube in a sedan. Basically it will be a weekend only vehicle.

Like who?

Just check back later, you'll see who... ;)

I wouldn't go for anything as big as an H2 but I want to pick up a cherokee pretty soon.

I think a lot of people are. I've been noticing more SUVs and less crappy old cars on the road. Seems that people are willing to ditch their beater for a "nice" SUV despite the high fuel costs.

I too have been looking at the prices and considering buying a used suv for winter/trail duty. With these prices, it can easily be done. Sure the vehicle will get back mpg, but it wont be my daily driver, thats the corolla.

Not really. I've been driving a borrowed pickup truck for the last few weeks because I'm moving to a new house, and I hate it. It feels very oafish - and it's just a little Chevy Colorado. The suspension feels very loose. I'd much rather drive a car than a truck or a truck-based SUV.

In terms of fuel consumed, the difference between bad and mediocre mileage is much bigger than the difference between mediocre and good mileage.

I just made the switch from a car to a Tacoma. It's small enough to get decent gas mileage as a daily driver, but has enough huevos to pull a 18' boat. I'd like a full size truck but don't want to pay for gas. I like to think of myself as in the puberty stage of my vehicular progression.

I almost went with an SUV but meh I like having a bed to haul shit in. As far as hummers, I'd have to be rich to afford the gas and I would go with the military version. Then I'd mount a .50 on the roof.

The Colorado is really bad though. I am shocked that GM even allowed it out. GM puts out really good cars, and REALLY bad ones.

But they're selling off those beaters for under $1000, which makes it good if you need a cheap car to drive into the ground :D

Sorry. Maybe that's a regional thing. Huevos = eggs = balls around here.

But yes, it has enough eggs :p

I went from a Tacoma (bought back by Toyota) to a Tundra. Sometimes I miss the ease of parking/etc...but when it comes to interior room, bed size and overall power, I can't look back.. :)

I had read that SUV'ers were depreciating faster these days but I'm amazed at the volume of ebay listings too!

112 Hummer H3's for sale

243 Hummer H2 listings

401 Cadillac Escalades

132 Ford Excursions

256 Ford Expeditions

155 Lincoln Navigators

As a comparison they are only:

129 Ford Focus's

50 Geo Metro's

26 Hyundai Elantras

6 Honda Fit's

Less Honda Civics on Ebay than 'Slades!
360 Honda Civic's

Well the Escalade was the car of choice in the HELOC ghetto. Not surprised to see those get dumped on the market as their owners get foreclosed on.
