I've often heard about CRTs going dimmer over a period of time and now own one that is hurting my eyes because of it :). Doesn't seem as crisp either. Luckily my other machine has a failry new monitor.

Anyone seen this happen or is this an isolated case?

I have an old 17" Samsung 17GLi that is a bit darker than it was I think I got it in like 97. So it is pretty old but hey 6 years, its not like it doesn't work its just a little dimmer.

All CRTs do that... don't worry... unless you just got your monitor.

Hey there :). Nope, its about four years old. I'm hoping to buy a replacement this summer; hopefully there will be an abundance of LCD deals

That's exactly what happened to my Dell 1028L (well... got it back in 1997...) it got dim and blurry.

Buy a bigger desk, it's probably cheaper than an lcd.

That would mean i'd have to buy a bigger room... which is more expensive than an FW900... :D

Hey, Antoneo,

I've got a CTX 1785 GM that has done different odd things like getting dark or going completely black and also losing focus. I've had it since Sept 1995. I can't say this is true for all monitors, but my CTX (and a DEC trinitron I used to have at work) have a plethora of additional adjuctment controls INSIDE the case. These are the fine tuning controls that the factory and technicians use to set the basic monitor image. They are extremely sensitive, but if you have a steady hand and can get into your monitor case, you might be able to breath a little more life into that monitor. Just be real careful not to stick your screw driver anywhere that might elicit a shock.

Getting in the case saved me from going out to buy a new monitor twice now when the image went bonkers and I could not clear it up with the onscreen controls. Good luck and be careful if you go this route.

My viewsonic a90f seems to be a touch dimmer then when I bought it, but it's still superbly bright and crisp.

Unfortunately, all crts will grow dimmer over time with use and will eventually either burn out or die a horrible death.
Have a nice day.
