Anyone else really impatiently waiting for R600?

And for me, that's eternity.

I got an X1800 XT last January, & then shortly afterward, grabbed the X1900 XT, since at the time, i could get them for cheaper than normal (purchase program pricing).

I was very impressed with the performance of the 8800 GTX when it came out, but not as much with the 8800 GTS.

And since they came out last year, in Canada at least, pricing on them has barely changed at all.

That & since nV still has issues w/ running in portrait mode in XP, i have no real interest in buying an 8800 that will run like crap for me.
In Vista, which i'm now running 90% of the time, the issue doesn't exist, but i'd still like to see the portrait mode joke fixed.

In the mean time, i've purchased a nice 2560x1600 LCD, which doesn't run many newer games too well at that resolution with this X1900 XT obviously.

So i guess i am just getting incredibly tired of waiting :p

I want to see R600 come out, as i feel it will force down pricing on nV's overpriced high end.

And then i'll be more willing to grab either an 8900 or X2800/2900/whatever it's gonna be called...

Why do you think Nvidia's high end is overpriced?

I think $550 for a high end card that is 2x faster than the fastest ATI offering (plus better IQ) and has no competition is a more than fair price.

4-500 is more reasonable at minumum IMO. More than 1/2 of 1000 dollars is a lot of money for a vidcard many months after release

Highest end now = worth half that in less than a year usually.

So i never like buying the highest end unless i can get it for cheaper than normal.

When i got my X1900 XT, i paid less CND than you guys did in USD (or i would've likely not bought it).

I personally kinda always had this $500 CND max for spending on a video card, & the cheapest 8800 GTXs are like $650 here, & that's after MIR...

I bought an 8800GTX, and I'm still kind of anxious to see the X2900XT. If the Vista drivers are more mature and there is at least a 10-20% performance increase in Vista over the 8800GTX, I'll pick one up. :)

I think it's pretty much a given that the first R600 based cards will out perform the current 8800s out there, but it's yet to be seen if NVidias 8800 ultra or whatever they're calling it will be able to match/surpass it.

I've been waiting for the R600 since forever and ended up getting an 8800GTX the month it was released.

Great decision because the R600 has been delayed since December.

I don't wait. I knew it would be even longer for what I want to show up, a high end card with a single slot cooler. So I just went with last years model the 7950gt.

When you look at how some people were saying to wait for the R600 when the G80 came out, that's 5 months of waiting for nothing.

The same can be said for an NVIDIA refresh or even an ultra......who knows when.

When you are ready to buy, get what's best for you. If you are truly that worried about it, buy an eVGA and use their step up program.

as i see it you have two choices ...
1) continue waiting

:sun: ... :clock: .... :moon:

or

2) bite the bullet and buy a GTX and "put up with" the issues
:| :brokenheart: :(

have you considered ...

option 3)

... X-firing your x1900xt? they are pretty cheap - even used

A WHOLE YEAR?! Dude, I'm still using a 6800 here. And to be quite honest, it's been holding up very admirably. Although it feels like it is on the edge of playability with FEAR.

My take on this is unless they are giving them away pricewise the R600 is coming too late to consider anymore. The peeps that are waiting for the card should wait 1 to 2 months more and get the R650 or whatever they call the refresh.

Now if they drop the price down to $300-$400 or so for the GDDR4 version after a month or 2 of being out then it might be a good buy.

Same with the 8800GTX. Wait for the refresh unless you can get a killer deal on one.

I agree (about just wait for refresh)

You know, it's interesting to compare Nvidia getting sh*t out on time to ATI never seeming to, with game companies never getting their software out on time. It can obviously be done (see nvidia and whatever accurately released game); when games like Crysis, Oblivion, etc etc end up delayed for 6-12-14-18-20 months from their originally promised release date, and then end up not better with time but worse (see oblivion) it really becomes fking tiresome.

what is wrong with xfire?
... unless the OP's MB doesn't support it

1900XT and 1950xt are cheap and common ... even new ;)

and a +50% performance boost seems what the Dr ordered :p

I am also waiting for the refresh to the 8800s as well as the R600. My X1900XT is starting to show its age in some titles. Nvidia hasn't really impressed me with their 8800 drivers though.

To be honest I'm looking forward to the 8800 Ultra more since that's my next most likely upgrade.

Screw the R600, get a 8800 GTS for now. There aren't going to be any good DX10 games in the short term so get a high end card once there's at least 4 good DX10 games on the market.

Anyone waiting for R600 should be careful. It's so late that I am expecting R600's refresh right after its release, a la R520/R580.

That is very much a possibliity. Then again, the other possibility is that AMD is actually skipping the original R600 and going straight to the 65nm 'refresh', which has been a topic of speculation. Although, on the high end I would advise waiting for the GDDR4 card.

I would have still been waiting for R600 if my HIS X1900XTX IceQ3 hadn't crapped the bed on me. I RMA'ed it to Newegg & because they were OOS on XTX's at that juncture, I was able to apply the value towards an 8800GTX to replace it & despite the shaky state of Nvidia's 8 seris drivers I'm very satisfied.

At this point I'm hoping to go at least another year to year & a half from now before I upgrade again.

What do people think the 8800GTX resell value is going to be come around August?

It will be 2nd dog to the 8900GTX/8800GTX Ultra, and whatever AMD has out.

around $375ish?

For those mentioning Crossfire, i did think about it for a minute or two.

Then i came back to my senses.

I have been very anti-SLI/CF since the inception, since they bring a host of new issues i don't ever want to deal with.

No dual displays w/o "multi monitor mode".
No where even close to 100% performance improvement yet 100% more cost.
New fan needed since i can't tolerate the noise on default X1900 series.
Tons of driver issues, nevermind Vista Crossfire.

Helllllll no.

Oh, & no, i don't believe in waiting, but i also don't believe in buying overpriced products w/ inability to correctly run in portrait mode.
So simply put, nV isn't like to make it into my rig anytime soon.
Unless of course i decide to completely quit running XP, which may very well be a near reality.
