I know a bunch of people here bought the Gateway 6400 server back when it was on sale for $500. I am one of those peple..
It's a great server, but I found it to be way too loud. I am now in the process of replacing components to quiet it down.
The loudest thing on my system was the CPU Fan/Heat Sink. It had narrowly spaced fins, that caused a high pitched whine as the fan would pull air through it. I originally thought it was the hard drives making this noise, but some debugging identified the CPU fan as the problem.
I replaced it with an Antec "Jet Cool" CPU cooler. It's rated at 30dBa, and costs ~ $20. It is very quiet.. I can't hear it at all with the case closed & the case fans running.
Next, I will look for 120mm case fans to replace the current ones. That should get the noise down to a very reasonable level.
I also set up a Yahoo Group forum for GW 6400 users to exchange/consolidate information, if anyone is interested:
