Anyone else prefer W2k to XP?

You can always setup XP to "feel" like XP. I think XP is a better OS but it definately looks like a childish OS. Very blocky and looks almost like a comic.

I used both XP and 2K on my old system and they worked flawlessly. For some reason, after I upgraded my motherboard and cpu, when I tried to install XP on the system, it would get corrupt files after a few days of uptime. I formatted and reinstalled XP with the same results. I installed 2K and it was fine. Weird.

I prefer Win2K's mouse handling over WinXP. The mouse acceleration in games seems to be eternally on, no matter what registry hacks or command line tweaks I use. Windows 95, 98, NT, 2K all feel right, but XP does not.

I've used Win2k since a few months after it was released and up until XP it was the best Windows OS I've ever used. I use XP Pro at home and Win2k at work. I do miss some of the features in XP Pro like the built-in CD burning and Remote Desktop when I'm at work. I could probably live with either of them but I'd pick XP over Win2k all the time. I also find both of them are equally stable too.

I too prefer Win2k SP3 over XP.

Yes you can setup Xp to look & feel like win2k but what's the point? Why not just install Win2k to start with.😉

been using XP since the RC1 preview without any major problems

although I do prefer Windows 2000 Professional to XP

I use em both 🙂 I have Win2K Pro on my system at home and XP on my laptop here with me. Never had probs with 2K, but have already re-installed XP 2 times in the 6 months that I have had the laptop.

Hence my vote definately goes to 2K ...

Still using Win2K.

XP has no benefits to me whatsoever, but it's more of a hastle to setup properly, and I can't get Motorhead to work in it.
Plus I found even more annoyances in XP compared to Win2K.

Moved up to XP at home this year.
2K at work.

I have no problems with 2K, I think it's great, but I don't want to be w/o these at home:

-Simple Filesharing This is SO MUCH NICER. When you aren't on a domain, win2k filesharing permissions are tedious and cryptic. XP is just "Share folder" and then anyone on the network can get in. No problem.
-Unbelieveable start up time. Damn, XP is fast to boot. I don't reboot or shutdown often, but when I do, it sure beats waiting.
-Taskbar grouping. So nice when all your open windows don't become a little sliver of a button because you have too many open.
-Remote Desktop/Assistance is sweet for helping relatives with XP from another city. No need to mess with VNC or anything because it's built in. and even the lowliest computer user can make it work.

For work:
-Logon/off while another user is logged in. I REALLY wish we could do this on our win2k boxes at work! That would be SO useful.

Really, the Simple Filesharing is what did it for me. I really hated propagating permissions each time you put a new file in your shared folder. That's so redundant.

Side note: I also really want that Windows Media Center for XP when it comes out... I already have a PC in the living room. Running it with an interface made for that would be heaven!

WINXP activation sound like such a hassle for someone who upgrade constantly that I never bothered to upgrade to XP from W2K.

Actually, it's not as bad as it's made out to be. Yes, it shouldn't be there period, but at least it's pretty painless. I haven't had to do anything with WPA on mine and I upgrade all the time. Once I had to re-register office for a friend when I reformatted his computer, but it was like a 2 minute phone call. A lot easier than I thought it would be.

It is hard to beat w2k though. M$ really outdid themselves on that one. So well it's hard to convince people to upgrade! 😀 hahahah!

I'm using a version of WinXP Pro that doesn't need to be activated and I think it's a great step from Win98. I've played on a Win98 comp yesterday (my sister's) and it kept locking. I got rid of Win98 for her and installed WinXP instead and it's now very stable. I haven't tried Win2k yet, I'll probably never try it since I'm so satisfied with WinXP (apart from the constant security holes). I'm now going to try Linux for it's low system requirements. If it doesn't take XP, it will have Linux (I hate troubleshooting with 98...)

This 'feel' your talking about is what makes gaming so bad in 2000

When I switched to xp I also upgraded mobo and cpu. All I can say is that 2000 was definately more stable for me. There are a lot features I like in xp and wouldn't want to go back with both of us sharing the system. Most of the features help my wife more than me. If I had a system for myself I would go back to 2000 in a minute. I am tired of having to reboot xp once a week it gives me flashbacks of win9x. 😉

I'm using XP Pro and I like it except one thing when update system bios, XP refuses to boot.

No problems here with Bios updates and XP,installed about five VIA 4-in-1 drivers so far & it eats them all for breakfast, rock stable ,no crashes, just like the OS should be 😉.

XP all the way.

🙂

I am using both, and there are a few things about XP pro that I like. Being able to switch users is cool.
2k pro was and is very stable, and I have only really crashed XP once. I was going through a bunch of hardware testing (dang FS/FT forum!), and it finally had enough with all the driver swapping, LOL!

in my home I have 4 computers running windows 2000, 2 computers running windows 98se, and one laptop thats running XP home (and I would have put it on 2000 but HP dosent have decent driver support)

I've intalled most of the M$ OS's and thus far since SP2 windows 2000 has been my favorite.
People go on about stuff like the movie making software in XP or the CD burning Software, I say to that I can get freeware movie software thats better, and I prefer to buy my cd-buring software seprate. As to compatiblity I havent really run across any software that I couldnt get going on 2000 (I know some undoubtly exists but I havent seen it)
I personlly find windows 2000 faster more stable and less bloated with stuff I consider usless or pointless. I also find that Widows 2000 being more mature an OS than XP seem to have a lot less problems. I also run some older systems 400MHZ and such, I find 2000 is lot faster on them, than your XP install. the system requirements are lower for 2000.
