It'll be fine, you'll love having a new phone, and if you want to upgrade, sell your "old" one to cover the cost of the upgrade.

There should be a brisk market for used CDMA iPhones with services like Page Plus available.

Imagine an iPhone with a $29/month plan, on Verizon's network. Even if it's an "old" iPhone 4, that's pretty sweet.

It will be equal to, or better than the iPhone 4 in almost every imaginable way.

He's got every right to get pissy. He's being jumped on by five raging nerds essentially calling him 'stupid' for wanting a device, that most in here will defend before their first born child, by being assualted with made up "facts" about a phone that is not available.

Essentially, the iPhone 4 is not suddenly shit because a new one may or may not come out in five months. Five months.
Nobody said the iPhone 4 was shit. It's not. I'd take one over my LG Venus or whatever the hell this piece of crap is...obviously. It's a great phone. He'll be happy with it. Do I think he might regret it in October of '12 when he has 28-month old technology and has to wait another 3 months to upgrade? Yup.

I like iPhones a lot. I've been waiting for a smartphone that is adequate for me to come to VZ for more than a year now. The iPhone is certainly that, but I'd rather wait another 2 weeks for a Thunderbolt, 3 months for a Bionic, or 4 months for an iPhone 5. 6 months is nothing in the big picture of life. 6 months is everything in the cell phone technology world.

But whatever, I'm just a douche bag.

The iPhone 4 is faster, has more RAM, has a higher res screen, is thinner, lighter and gets better battery life than the iPhone 3GS.
The iPhone 3GS is faster, has more RAM, and gets better battery life than the iPhone 3G.
The iPhone 3G had a 3G radio, had an improved speaker and case design, was subsidized for lower upfront cost, and was thinner and lighter than the iPhone 1.

The iPod line is similar, if they didn't improve specs, reduce size or increase battery life (and they did one of these things with every generation), they dropped the price.

Compare the HTC G1 to the G2, or the Nexus One, or any other current HTC Android device. Compare the Droid 2 to the Droid 1. Things get better or they stay the same, very seldom do they get worse. The PS3 is an exception, the launch version had more USB ports and hardware backwards compatibility.

I don't think it is zealotry for me to look at history and make a statement that is backed by said history. I think the only place where the iPhone line got worse was that the iPhone 3G and 3GS had worse overall battery life compared to the iPhone 1, and I think 3G v. EDGE is to blame for that.

???

I don't understand what you're trying to get at here but are you making fun of him for saying the newer iPhone 5 is going to be better than the older iPhone 4?

The next iPhone is 5-6 months away, not 2. It also won't be as huge of an upgrade going from 4 to 5 as it was from 3GS to 4.

The iPhone 4 is at least as good as anything else out there currently.

Only downside: you won't be cool on the Anandtech forums. :p

You're right. If the iPhone 5 is equal to the 4 in almost every imaginable way the OP should definitely wait. :hmm:

So you know what the 5 will have?

Don't listen to these damm people.
You know 99% sure that the GSM version will come out in late June like it has every year.
Theres no certainty the CDMA version will be release in June also.
Theres rumor that Apple will release the CDMA version few months later so they can stagger their launches.
It may be release in June also but its not 99% sure like the GSM version.

Back to the point, it shouldn't matter if the CDMA 5 comes out in June.
The 4 is still a great phone.
We know the 5 will have improvements but the only improvement that will make you regret buying the 4 now would be a 4" screen.
Dual core and all other stuff are nice but the 4 is blazing fast already.
I've used a 3GS recently and that phone is still blazing fast despite being 1.6 yrs old.
So if you've been duying to get a 4, get it.
Its a great phone no matter what happenned.

Dude, the 3gs -->4 was the biggest improvement yet.
Just the double resolution was worth the upgrade.
- Better camera, better video recording.
- Faster proccessor.
- Better battery life.
- Camera flash.
- Gyroscope
- Much better looking
The 3gs is just as fast in daily usage is because of the lower resolution.
Only reason I would regret getting the 4 now is if the 5 comes with a 4" screen.

Yup, every iPhone was a decent smartphone but the 4 was the first one that brought it into the realm of great smartphone when it launched since it had everything a modern smartphone has. All the prior iPhones always lacked big features but the 4 had practically everything someone could want in a smartphone.

YUP, the IP4 is responsible for me becoming an Apple lover.
Always hated Apple and their older iPhones were OK but never peak my interest.
Damm you Apple.

The whole 'wait X months' is a tired debate.

The fact is, you can ALWAYS wait 6 months and find something better in the cell phone market. You can use that logic for the rest of eternity if you want to.

Now do you see the gigantic holes in your logic?

99% of the time, I would agree with your wholeheartedly. However, the OP isn't talking about the smartphone market. He is talking about the Verizon iPhone market, which is populated by 1 phone. And based on historical evidence, we can say with high confidence that there will be a new iPhone in June. And there won't be another one for another year after that. This isn't Android where the 'best android EVAR' comes out every 2-3 weeks, this isn't the home computer market where prices are perpetually fluctuating and parts are being supplanted from top spots and value spots and everything else every week.

I would disagree.
I wouldn't say with high confidence that a CDMA 5 would be release in June.
It just wouldn't make sense doing it 5 months later.
Maybe down the road when Apple decide to combine gsm+cdma in the same phone, both network would get it at the same time.
It may or may not happen this June but I wouldn't say with high confidence.

lol this thread has gotten pretty amusing!

I'm glad someone is amused. It looks like things have calmed down a bit, but as moderator I request that people take the name-calling and tone of this thread down a notch or two.

Basically this. And the other alternatives aren't 6 months away.
