today without any warning at all they made their forums ign insiders only, a lot of people are very upset about this, if you jus look at the users it has about maybe 1500, out of 500k on right now, thats a major drop, I visited ign boards and these forums the most and this is just a shot in the back from ign.

There is already a petetion at : http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?ignbrds Please sign it.

Anyway, that really sucks. They can do what they want though...doesn't mean it's fair. I see this as a growing trend unforunately.

I've noticed it recently. Not the forums per se, but just their articles in general. Since they've begun the insider service IGN has slowly pulled its articles into the insider half of it. It began just as an extra section, now all but a few pictures and 1 or 2 movies for each game is "Insider only." Any story that is even remotely interesting is insider also. IGN used to be one of my favorite sites on the internet, but they are rapidly losing my interest. I don't think I've spent more than an hour on their site total in the last 2 months. Unfortunately most things that I would be willing to pay for are on the other gaming sites I read.

It's sad to see one of the sites I've been reading since I got on the net turn into a subscriber only place.

I haven't visited IGN in 3 months, they really went to pooh a while back. Do a search for IGN and you'll find a couple of threads by me already addressing that this would happen. Their entire site will be gone eventually. Anandtech will do the same thing if they go subscriber only, as would any other site.

As you can see, they have 1500 of FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND users on. The forums will become slow, and people will no longer bother to visit. They will quit, and those interested will grow tired of it being dead and leave also. There are ALWAYS other sites out there that are free. Just hope bandwidth prices come down before some other great sites die.

<< what's IGN ??? >>

It is an online web site, mainly about video games that are out or are coming out. They've also got sections on movies and anime.

IGN.com linkified if you're interested.

They used to have all the latest info, all for free. They would get early videos of games and used to have very in depth reviews. Now they are nothing compared to what they used to be. To get almost anything good you MUST be a subscriber.

NOOOOOOO:|:|!!! I used to post on their PC Hardware boards all the time before I found out about Anandtech. I stopped going after a while though because they were sooo slow and weren't quite as active as the AT forums.

Yeah IGN has been holding back their real content for a while now. My favorite is that they won't let me read their reviews of pre-release games. As though there aren't a couple more quality sites--entirely free--from whom I can get a better opinion.

If anandtech goes membership only, I'll probably pony up the $30 per annum; after all, I learn stuff here 🙂

(Though I shouldn't admit I'd pay; that way they'll be less likely to charge)

Exactly why I never even started on their boards there. I really liked their hardcore TV forums, probably some of the funniest clips I've ever seen. When they moved those to the forums instead of right off the website I stopped watching, it took forever to get to anything.

More and more sites are doing things like this. My least favorite experience is when they allow you to read the first page of an article but when you click NEXT PAGE they ask you to subscribe or login to view the rest.

Actually, the reduced traffic might be a benefit to them because bandwidth is so frickin' expensive.

Also, by making you sign in they probably also force you to enable cookies. So even if you're into blocking cookies you must enable them for the content so advertisers like DoubleClick get to track you again. I could do without that.

The 'net is definitely going commercial.

IGN has started sucking for a long time. Least you can still browse the boards though. I lost all respect for IGN recently when they gave WWF Raw a 9.1.

i think what they did makes great sense, and was a good move for them, and no, i'm not pissed off at all about it, there are other places to talk about/read about games

It makes no sense considering they already had a "subscriber only" area on the forums, located at the very top. IGN is going to be out of business in a year anyway - they're just spitting in their own grave.

Unless you like to listen to a bunch of 14 year old rich kids talk about video games there is no loss.

I actually found it pretty useful if i needed help with a game or deciding on a game to buy.

I know it midnight PST for me, but:

749 users out of 563,099 total are currently online.

LMFAO!

Hah... IGN has been doing a lot of stupid things lately. I doubt those who signed up for a full years subscription will even have a site to visit by time that year is up.

The PS2 boards have been a favorite of mine(used to be) and there are SO many excellent members who contributed, but now those forums are going to die so quickly.

<< i miss dailyradar 🙁

i dont even bother with ign anymore, gamespot and shacknews are where i get my info from.

At one time, they had a poll asking if people would pay to call IGN toll free and talk to their editors and a guest speaker. Only doomed dotcoms get stupid ideas like that.
I bet is they'll be gone in less than 2 years.
