This is my 3rd night on 10-6. Not very fun. Does your body ever get used to staying up through the night?

I've been working shift for around 10 years now.

At my current job, we just rotated. I'm on my first night of 9pm - 5am. No biggie. I can manage.

I'm fairly used to night shifts, so far I manage to adjust fairly well between the night & day shifts, and other than sleeping through noon it doesn't really affect my life.

It's all about your ability to sleep during the day. I've never had a problem. But the wife works midnights and travels for work. Last week she came home and slept 28 hours. I told her that while she was out I was checking our insurance policy, just in case.

Current job, 10pm to 8am, a few jobs ago 3:30pm to 3:30 am. I like working night shift over day shift, i don't have to deal with management, customers, and most people i hate seem to like day shift. Where i tend to do a lot of over time (when i get the work) night shift is a blessing in that my free time is when all the stores and banks are open.

I'm night shift here as well. In one sense, it can be really nice. There are fewer problems, fewer customers, less micromanagement, minimal dress code, etc. That means less work-related headaches. On the flipside, I've incompetent Indian and Filipino people to deal with, Americans who don't answer their pagers when the shit hits the fan, and the fact that I work nights to deal with. But then, there's shift bonus!

Nope. I used to tolerate them very well, and I love drinking in the morning, but you never truely get used to it.

I never got accustomed to it, even after 4 years of working 10:30 to 7am. I never slept much.
If you find yourself unable to cope, get out as soon as possible. Your brain will eventually break down without enough sleep.

same here, did it for 6 years and I never got used to it. It brought me to my breaking point eventually, I gained 30 pounds and mentally screwed up.

Took me about 6 months to get back to normal.

I'm working first shift now but I switch to shift three (nights) in January--I can't wait. And you do get used to the shift that you are, usually just in time to switch shifts again.

I like nights. No drama, just strange patients!! :) Messes with your diet though. Have to eat less, cause I tend to get the munchies at work
