Gamespot scoring is fishy. If you look at like, e.g. Civ4 reviews, you'll notice a LION'S share of the pie chart give it 'perfect' ratings. But then read the reviews, and maybe 1 in 50, if that many, give it a perfect 10 in reviews. Even the most rabid fans with reviews which read like product marketing copy give it a 9.4 or so.
Also, the review system is HEAVILY tilted by the importance of graphcis and sound. If a game has great graphics and sound but absolutely asslike everything else, it'll get at least a 7/10, simply because there are no sliders for 'originality', 'brokenness', 'completeness' etc. You just have 'gameplay' and 'reviewer's tilt' to work with, both of which look rather subjective.
I haven't paid any importance to a compositive numerical review of a game from a mainstream site in years. Game publishers negotiate minimal ratings on their titles before they advertise on the site or in the magazine. Read the full review, try to read between the lines, and then read current owner reviews and product support forums. Yes, that means you can't be the first to own a game. On the other hand, I've adopted this approach about 2 years ago, and it's helped me avoid a LOT of stinkers.
Those who just go by the glossy shiny 10/10!1one thousand one hundred eleven!!1!11 scores without bothering to dig deeper deserve exactly what they get.
