i have used multiple different beers for marinading beef, as well as chicken, and the darks do tend to taste better

i have also found that bourbon can be quite good for marinating as well!

I've marinated venison with beer before, but when I did steaks with it, they weren't too good.

However, marinating steaks with Hornsby's cider is really good for grilling. The sugar in the cider kind of caramelizes, and gives the steak an awesome taste. I usually do Hornsby's, a little lemon, garlic, worcestershire, & Tony Chachere's.

My marinade has always consisted of about half a can of beer, sometimes more, depending on the amount of meat, some Wishbone Italian dressing, some Worcestershire (sp?) sauce, a bit of soy sauce, some garlic powder and lots of pepper. Once in a while for some flair I will add in some hot sauce of some kind and maybe some spicy mustard. Never heard anything but praise for my steaks.
