The other day I got a flat tire and fortunately enough, I pulled over onto a fire ant bed. Much like Gerald Ford, I was delicious.

My arms look like I've got the measles. Any other fire ant fans out there?

What is even better is when it floods they form up into balls to protect the queen. Floating balls of fire ants, yummy.

A few have been scouting my backyard lately for the first time...so I've been sure to eliminate each that I see.

I haven't seen any the past couple days, which hopefully is a good sign.

I can't get a good picture of my arms that shows them. They look like this except i've got about 20 of them on my hands and arms.

When I was young, my family lived in SC. There were tons of them there. I remember a little boy that lived in the same apartment complex as us got attacked. He was sitting on a brick wall, and it must have been too close to the nest. He started screaming, and his mom ran out to see what was wrong. He was covered in ants. She stripped him naked on the spot and rushed him inside to wash them off.

How exactly does that work?

Basically the ants form a ball around the queen. As flood waters rise the ants float until they get somewhere the entire colony won't drown or the waters go down.

Yikes. I've had that happen to me before, and it's not fun. As a kid my cousins and I got into some hay that had ants in it.

Fortunately ant bites don't hurt as much as an adult as they did when I was a kid. One got me on my knuckle, and it's kind of sore, but somehow I'll make it through... :p
