Try signing up with several IT recruiting firms. That's what I did after being laid off over a year ago. They found a contract job for me.

I've been looking like a madman. Been in IT since 95, and getting few calls back. Not only that, but if I try to apply for some grunt tech or helldesk job they say it's obvious I'm taking what I can get.

Well DUH!

They don't want to hire you for low level work because they are afraid you will leave for a better job after a short time.

Nope but I have a relatively specialized engineering degree, and wasn't afraid to move across the country for work.

Tons of PC/Desktop support gigs in Omaha right now. Search "Omaha, NE" and industry to "Information Technology Systems"

I'm half-heartedly looking. We have an official unemployment rate of about 18%, but the unofficial rate is over 20%. Employers are now asking for bachelor's degrees for entry-level bookkeeping jobs.
I was wondering how that was going.

You ever thought about the "R" word......Retirement? :)

Numerous times...I can't file for my social security disability until the work comp case is finally closed...once that happens, IF I get the disability, I can get my union pensions.

I been out for just over 3 years now. Sucks balls.

And as people have already pointed out, you and me are overqualified. Had the Taco Bell manager flat out tell me I wasnt going to get hired because other burger flippers were scared I'd take over in less than a year. They dont wanna compete with someone who's done lots of technician work and some minor engineering work.
And good places like Micron & Global Foundries want me to have very specific skills so they arent hiring either.

Milwaukee is hiring. I get about 4-5 calls a day just having my resume on dice. The majority of them are Windows migration or SCCM related.

Also, we have a few entry level position where I work now, if you don't mind the commute PM me.

In economic times like these, you have to set yourself apart from everyone else. You forget that there are 100 applications that are nearly identical to yours. Here are a few things you should be doing if you aren't already:

1) Tailor your resume to the company and job you are applying for. If they say they want good Excel skills, make sure to highlight what you know about Excel.
2) Always have a cover letter, customized to the company and job. Include specifics about the company that excite you (or pretend they excite you).
3) Always offer references.
4) Look into the company environment and play off that. Say it's the kind of environment that you thrive in, regardless
5) Say you've heard a lot of positive things about the company. If they pressure you from where, it's either a friend or someone you were chatting with at the bus stop/restraunt/etc while you were waiting for whatever.

I've always gone the route of telling them from the start that I'm really interested in looking for a cultural fit for somewhere that I could enjoy coming to work at. Try to be as frank as possible. While some things you'll be pulling out of your ass, you have to make sure to put some perfume on it and pretend it doesn't smell like ass. That's much easier to do with the less complete shit you tell them.

TLDR: You have to make your resume stand out and match the job you are applying for. Over-sell yourself, and catch up to what you sold yourself as, so you don't look like a liar and get blacklisted from the company.

And that ladies and gents is how you win elections. :)

I've had a number of candidates turn me down because of the location. I really dont buy the "cant" in cant find work. Theres work out there. You may have to move and it may have to be to a location you dont particularly like, but theres work out there.

You are right there definitely is.
For some people moving is easier said than done, but I agree.
I do a long drive for work, because this is where I found work.. Don't really want to move here (rural town) so I put up with the drive.
