Anyone else here running the Silverstone OP650?

When I recently built my new rig I was pretty set on getting one of the Corsair PSUs that everyone is raving about. And rightly so.

I scored my mobo/CPU/RAM/hsf from a member of another forum and only needed a few other odds and ends, including a PSU. I had been reading the reviews on Jonnyguru's website and was understandably impressed with the Corsair 520/620HX power supplies, but of course the rebates on the Corsairs disappeared from Newegg's site on the day that I planned on ordering...I had planned on going with the 620HX, but at $169.99 I wondered if there was a comparable alternative.

I encourage you guys to at least check out the Silverstone OP650 as it is currently $149.99 at Newegg (even cheaper at Sundial Micro) and the only one in this class that I could find that scored a 10/10 in Jonny's Performance category. It's even more efficient than the Corsairs and has rock solid rails with next to no ripple:

"The ripple and noise, or lack of it, is really impressive on the Olympia OP650. If it weren't for the purple waveform showing off a .01mV scale on the +12V, we may not even know there's a change in the ripple at all."

The unit stays VERY cool and is as quiet as a mouse. It's pretty new, so it doesn't have the plethora of positive reviews on Newegg that the Corsair does, but Jonny's review was enough for me and this PSU looks like it will serve my needs very well. I'm not here to say that it's definitively better since I don't own the Corsair to directly compare the two, but Jonny has already done a pretty good job at that. I'm sure I couldn't go wrong with either one. My experience with the OP650 has been very positive and I just wanted to give this unit a little more attention as I'm certain that it's a worthy contender and would be right at home in the rigs of many here.

My 1/50th of a dollar, FWIW. Constructive comments welcome. 🙂

Well I think we all know how to regard the "reviews" posted by Neweggers. A lot of them comment on a product without even owning it. But a lot of people do take the positive/negative ratio into consideration when making a purchase; that's the only reason I mentioned it.

Seems good, but it's not modular, which is a definite disadvantage IMO.

Also, till i see it reviewed @ SPCR, i won't get too excited by the quietness claim.

They basically rate the Corsair HX520/620 as the quietest high end PSUs out there, & i have learned to trust their reviews.

I got mine purely because of their reviews, & it is indeed the quietest high end PSU i have ever heard.

Well, I do realize it's not modular and that is obviously a personal preference. If you need modular, by all means go with the Corsair or the Seasonic "M" series. My last PSU, an OCZ Modstream 520, was modular and I had no problems out of it but Jonny's review of this PSU sealed the deal for me.

It is a quiet PSU. Maybe not completely silent, but it doesn't add any noticeable noise to my Antec case with two 120mm fans, a Zalman 9500 cooler, and an 8800GTS. I do not find noise to be an issue with this PSU.

I hope this thread doesn't end up getting flooded with Corsair owners trying to defend/justify their purchase. 🙂 As I said, the Corsair is a great PSU. I just wanted to shed a bit more light on the Silverstone since it's newer and hasn't gotten the same amount of attention. For someone that doesn't care about having modular connections, it is quite the performer. If this one died, my next purchase would probably be the Corsair since the rebates are back in effect at Newegg (and I think it's even cheaper at Buy.com now).

Oh, don't misunderstand me, it looks like yours is superb, & frankly, a better +12V rail setup w/ better performance than the Corsairs.

But the modular cabling on the HXs is a godsend, & i think that the quietness frankly has sold tons of them, as many of us rely on SPCR's reviews alot, since they truely measure noise in a way i've really not seen any other site do.
