Anyone else here make this stupid mistake and question about mobo...?

Hello!

Alright, about a week ago I FINALLY got all the parts to build my first A64 computer. I get everything in there and it works great. I didn't like the temps though (over 60 C on the processor and almost hitting 40 C for the system). I open it back up and took the CPU out to clean off the thermal paste, reapplied the thermal paste, reseated the heatsink, added a couple of case fans, and added a slot fan. I put everything back togethor, hook it back up and push the power button...it doesn't turn on. I didn't think it was a big problem and probably just something knocked loose. One hour later and I'm still fiddling with the thing and am pretty mad, thinking that maybe, just maybe static must of somehow got my setup. I decided to reseat the CPU just incase. I take off the HSF and noticed that the A64 was in the socket BACKWARDS!!!! I guess I was to excited about my first A64 system that I forgot to make sure the arrow on the edge was at the right place. I take out the CPU and see that two pins have been completely "burned" out of the CPU and are stuck in the mobo socket. Once I take the CPU out the computer will now boot but now I get a continuous beeping sound. The CPU is dead for sure but I'm still wondering about the mobo since I don't have another CPU to test with it. Can it possibly still be working? Or did I just fry my A64 3000 and DFI LanParty UT NF3? I'm still kicking myself about this and am even more suprised that I could make such a stupid mistake, I've been changing CPUs since the K6-2 days and this is the first time I have ever done something like this. Oh well, now I guess I have an excuse to get a socket 939 CPU and mobo 🙂, which I've already ordered and should be here by Wednesday. Heheh, this is a well learned lesson and I will now NEVER forget to make sure the CPU is in there the right way.

Is the mobo still working...or is it fried too?

Thanks!

You won't know until you find another CPU to try it out with. Hopefully the continuous beeping is a sign that the motherboard is still ticking.

Bummer, I hope it's still working. I've already lost about $140 on the CPU and I'd hate to lose another $106 on the mobo. Both status lights on the mobo and all the things hooked up to it (CPU fan, VGA fan) turn on...

*crosses fingers*

That's a major D'OH, buddy. I didn't think they would even go in backwards. Anyway, thanks for the heads up, when I build mine I'll be extra careful to line up the arrows.

EDIT: Nope, they're still in there. I'll probably have to take a pair of needlenose pliers and pull them out.

Yeah, I was quite suprised to see it in there backwards. I guess I just have bad luck with A64. This actually isn't my first A64 computer but this was going to be my first "permanent" A64. The first one I built was with a MSI K8T Neo. It worked great...until the mobo died on me 2 days after it was assembled. Fortunately, the mobo was the only thing that died and since has been RMA'd. My second A64 experience was with the Epox 8KDA3J. It worked great but the vcore just fluctuated to much for my tastes. At stock voltage (1.55) it was 1.4. At 1.75 it was only 1.6. And now I fried my CPU and possibly my DFI LanParty UT NF3 (this was entirely my fault though). I'm moving up to 939 though, hopefully it won't be such a rocky ride.

i just got a set of klipsch pmu 5.1 's and succeeded in plugging the svideo-like connector for the volume control uniti it wrong - bent one of the pins completely over. fortunately i was able to straighten it out. guess i don't know my own strength ... !
in the past i have received cpu's off ebay with bent pins, one was really bad, the guy must have pulled it out of the socket sideways, all the pins on one side were bent. took me more than an hour but i was able to straighten them all out and save the cpu. i was real worried i'd break a pin off tho ... !

Gah? I'm guessing it was a mistake then to leave those in there. This was the first time I've been in a situation like this so I wasn't sure what to do and was hesitant on trying to pry those two pins out.

Wow joe. I don't think I could handle trying to unbend all those pins. I've recieved a few P4's off of eBay with bent pins. None of them were THAT serious though.

Well you should remove the pins when you can.... but its not life threatening to the mb to power up without a CPU.....I have had to do so a couple of times to reset everything and get it all back to factory. Not something you want to do.... just sometimes that is the only option.
