Last night I did an apt-get update and then apt-get upgrade

It removed gaim for some reason, so i thought perhaps they changed the name of the package and it was listed below in all the other ones listed. So when I turned my laptop on this morning gaim won't work, go figure.

When I do apt-get install gaim I get this
Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
gaim: Depends: libaspell15c2 (>= 0.60) but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages

So I goto install libaspell15c2 to see what the problem with it is, and it wants to remove gnome, bluefish, and libaspell15.

Any ideas on what to do?

Yes, I am having the same issue. I can't install gaim either.

Either it's there is a broken package somewere (may or may not even be libaspell15c2) that is uninstallable, or it's been upgraded from Experimental to Unstable lately and you need to wait a bit for more packages from Experimental to be installed.

Maybe it's worth it to go file a bug about...

Just took a look and found it's already been filed:

You are probably running unstable, and this is probably related to the
in-progress g++ abi transition:

Changes:
aspell (0.60.3-2) unstable; urgency=low
.
* debian/control: renamed libaspell15 to libaspell15c2 for the
* GCC 4.0 ABI change transition

If you intend to continue running unstable, you'd better prepare
yourself for more of this.

Justin

Looks like you'll just have to wait a bit for it to resolve itself out. The transition to GCC 4.0 is going to be rough. Maybe a few more weeks. This thing is normal in Unstable, and hence that's were it gets it name.

Sid was the kid from ToyStory that broke toys then put them back together to make other toys. It's under going the transition from concentrating on being Sarge to concentrating on being on Etch.

Another bad thing that's happenned recently is that unless your using kernel 2.6.12 udev will not let itself start from the start up scripts.

So unless your using 2.6.12 series kernel, it'll install, but not work. So watch out when doing a upgrade for a while.

Maybe it would be a good idea to stick to Unstable Sarge for a bit until things settle down, or just not upgrade for a bit, unless you want to run into more problems like this. If your willing to put up with issues like this time to time, then stick with unstable. :)

Maybe if you look around you can find a older version of gaim to install, or install a different instant messaging client for the time being.

Yes.

Take note that the initial response to that bug report was a resounding 'f*ck-off' (a good and proper response). That's exactly how NOT to file a bug report :)

BTW, Looks like the gaim packages from Stable still work fine in unstable.

I just had to manually install gaim and gaim-data from Sarge. (manually download it, and do a dpkg --install package-name)
http://packages.debian.org/stable/net/gaim
http://packages.debian.org/stable/net/gaim-data

Of course this all depends on how much you need is already installed. :)
