I am in the process of building a Thunderbird system and had a question. I went to AMD's web site and found the "contact us" e-mail address and wrote to them. I knew that they probably get lots of e-mails, so I was trying to be patient. 1 week later, no reply. I e-mailed them again and told them that I had writen them but had not received a reply. Next day I received a e-mail from them, a standard form letter telling me to go to their web site. I wrote back telling them (nicely) that I had been to their web site but the answer to my qustion was not there and could they please reply to my question. That was another week ago, no answer. This is my first AMD system, is AMD allways this bad with technical support? I am wondering if I should sell the ABIT KT7 board I bought and go to Intel. Anyone had any problem with AMD tech support? Is Intel just as bad? Any advise would be appreciated!! THANKS

My experience with company tech support has always been bad with email -- out of 6 occasions, I recieved 0 responces (from 6 different companies).

That said, if you problem is with the assembly of your system and not the chip, I can understand why. Why don't you ask the question here on the anandtech forum, where you'll have more answers than you can shake a stick at?

unless the chip is a defect, there is no reason why you would ask them for tech support.

What was the question that you waited 2 weeks to hear the answer to...?

Pretty much every big company has horrible email tech support. Except for TCWO and AOL, AOL being the big surprise. I'm sure Intel is just as bad. If you have a bad problem, why not call?

I called AMD tech support once to ask them about certified fan/heatsinks. I was on hold for no longer than 1 min, and the person was very nice. I also know a friend who wrote an email to AMD requesting those little shiny AMD sticker logo's that go on your case. He got a responce the same day, and they shipped 20 to him for free :)

I`ve just gone from Intel to AMD based PC & to be honest there is no difference in stability on my new system(I`m also a gamer) so I`m a very happy AMD customer.

FOH,

Whenever I've emailed AMD their response has been prompt and professional. Usually there is a turn around of a couple hours for their automated email system to kick in, and then you must respond to the message and acknowledge that you have read their FAQ's and browsed their website, etc. After that I haven't waited more than a couple days. Since you had to wait two weeks for the automated response, I'd say their was an email mixup.

But, like everyone said, you'd probably get much better general support from these forums.

I have to agree with Modus, they responded to my E-Mail in a couple of hours AND they provided a complete answer.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I know if it was a hardware question that this forum is the ONLY place to ask-- everyone here is ALWAYS very helpfull!!!
But what I was asking AMD was, if, when, and where the 1G Thunderbird would be available in a retail box, something only they would know. Not a big deal, I thought that was a easy question that they could answer in a few seconds.
As for your questions,--Why don't I just call? Maybe I missed it but I couldn't find any phone # on AMD's web site.-- And I agree--unless the chip is a defect, there is no reason why you would e-mail tech support, but ----There are 7 e-mail's listed on their site 1.tech support 2.literature 3.investor questions 4.feedback 5.reseller program 6.job opportunities 7.finding a individual by name. I thought feedback would be the one to use, but it says right under it "For product inquiries, use the technical support addresses listed above" Maybe I asked the wrong person but that was the only e-mail that I thought made sense to use. Oh well, it wasn't big deal. But if they can't answer a simple question it makes me wonder if it is worth the extra money and time waiting for a retail box CPU just to get an extra warranty that won't do any good if you can't get service. Anyone else have an opinion on buying OEM or Retail CPU"S?
