Anyone else have love for old school turn based RPGs?

Think old Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger (though CT had a time gauge). I've been playing through a bunch of the older Dragon Quest titles on my DS and loving them. I know a lot of people now hate turn based RPGs but I still love them. Tons of grinding needed in lots of these games though.

Yeah I suppose the nostalgia factor does play a big role. However I've never played any of these specific games before. The story in many of these titles is epic and grand in a way that modern games just can't seem to quite reproduce.

I remember filling up my free time with Final Fantasies IV-VII. But within the past two years or so, I haven't enjoyed playing turn-based RPGs. Now I'm more into TES and other more modern RPGs.

There's nothing wrong with turn based RPG's like Final Fantasy except that perhaps there is too much combat. It's really an acquired taste though. Some will like it. Some won't. I grew up with them playing games like the original Final Fantasy so I do enjoy them and I'm sure nostalgia has a lot to do with it.

I used to live for turn-based JRPGs. Now though, I can't really stomach the old-school "pick Attack from a menu over and over" battle systems. I tried so hard to like Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey but they just bored me to tears.

I've come to realize that it wasn't so much the combat I liked in those old JRPGs. It was the feeling of progressing and getting stronger. It was picking my ultimate team and watching them grow into unstoppable badasses. The best that can be said about the combat is that it takes no skill or reflexes, so you can sit on your ass for hours and not get too fatigued

Also, IMO it seems like the best JRPG battle systems are the ones that treat Dragon Quest formula as something broken that needs to be fixed or replaced altogether. I'm talking games like Grandia, Star Ocean, Tales series, Final Fantasy XII & XIII, Valkyrie Profile, etc. Or at least the ones treat random battles as an annoyance that needs to resolve as quickly and unobtrusively as possible.

I used to love all the final fantasy games, then I just borrowed Final Fantasy XIII and I just couldn't get into the old advance-random battle thing anymore.

The guy that leads DQ development claims to always only develop for whatever system has the highest user base, which is why the last few games were all on the DS.

I have a ton of free time this week and was debating going through an old turn based RPG... Perhaps Mario RPG.

It's actually my favorite genre. And, I don't branch out much either. Which means, I have less and less games to play every year

At one time, I liked them for the strategy that was involved. Like the old gold box games, Pools of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, etc, etc. And, to a lesser extent, jrpg's like final fantasy, dragon quest, Shin Megumi Tensei, and such.

Then, there's always games like Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Planescape Torment, Knights of the Old Republic, and the Might and Magic series.

For the same reason, I like turn based strategy games, whether east or west, like Heroes of Might and Magic, Age of Wonders, Vaklyria Chronicles, Spectral Force, Operation Darkness, and Growlanser.

Now that I'm old though, I like them because I have absolutely 0 hand eye coordination, and they don't require any.

As much as I like fighting games, I totally suck at them, so they don't have any staying power with me, even though I do play them.

That's what got me into them. I'm a big fan of the series..owned sf,sf2,sfcd, and even sf 3 for the Saturn. Unfortunately, I they never released episode 2 and 3 stateside for sf3. Anyone know if there are translated roms out there for it?

Another one of my favs. was King's Bounty. I played that on my Genesis as well. This series got a reboot recently, and it's great Turn based fun.

Nope. I loved playing them at the time, but games these days are so much better. Baldurs Gate was awesome, but if i had 30 hours to kill today, i would rather play Dragon Age or Mass Effect.

I would play a turn-base game if it was a Facebook game or some such. Someplace where i can play accessible from anywhere, especially if they make it tablet/smartphone friendly.

Shining Force was what hooked me on JRPGs as well! Haven't played SF3 but I think I still have SF1, SF2, and SFCD in my basement somewhere

As far as translated roms for SF3 episodes 2&3, I know there are translation patches out there. Haven't tried them myself though.

I loved my Ultima games and the Wizardy franchise. With Wizardy you had to really had spend time to level your characters and map out the maze.

I don't think it is nostalgia for me because I loved Lost Odyssey. I wish JRPGs were still popular because I miss them.

You guys might be interested to know that Square has released FF 1, 2 and 3 for iOS (iPhone and iPod Touch). I've been playing FF1 for a couple days now and it's great!

My favorites of this genre were the FF series, Wizardry and Might and Magic.

They are my fav types of rpgs, I love turn base combat. I really enjoyed the strategy behind it with planning at least a step ahead for things you were setting up to do.

I only played Fallout 1 and 2, didn't play any other old RPGs. Doubt I'd like them if I tried today.

I was lucky enough to have a computer and a Nintendo back in the day so I'm loving some of the posts here:

Some other phenomenal old IBM-comp games I had: Wasteland (what Fallout was based on), Bard's Tale (I had #3 specifically), Sentinel Worlds & of course Ultima

Nintendo: Final Fantasy, Ultima Exodus, Dragon's Quest

Honestly, I had some of the most fun I've ever had listening to 80's pop on the radio and playing these games all night long during summer break.

Yes Pokemon counts. I actually just recently hot into it with Pokemon Heart Gold. Surprisingly good considering how much everything else surrounding pokemon, the anime etc, suck.

The games are solid, just stale because it's been a rehash of the same formula for the last 15 years. But hey, if it ain't broken... Hmm, never did finish Diamond.
