i was in car accident few years ago. ever since my lower back has given me pain. (bone scan and mri showed nothing, so it's just something i have to live with until it gets worse)

as a result i've had to carry around a lumbar cushion to anywhere that i'll be sitting for extended periods of time. what i'm wondering though is if anyone in similar situation has used a back brace? it'd be nicer to just wear a brace instead of lugging around a cushion. i'm resorting to asking here because, although i'd rather go to some store and try them out myself, i haven't been able to find such a store. so i don't know how effective they are. i have a weight lifting belt, but that provides no support and is pretty useless. how's a brace (ebay shows a variety for decent price)?

or do you have any other suggestions or things you do?

I injured my back when I was like 8 or 9 (fell off the ladder leading to the high dive.. back to concrete... ouch...) Well I've had problems ever since. 2 years ago I had some really bad problems, had a bone scan (cool picture :) ) and a bunch of X-rays. Nothing showed up. I didn't get an MRI because the bone scan cost a hell of a lot and since I had no real accident, insurance wouldn't pay a whole lot (bastards, but thats another thread). What I ended up doing was going to a physical therapy place and they put me on a program to help with the muscles in my back. I still get some sharp shooting pains sometimes, but since I've been working on my back things have been better. I still get antsy sitting for long periods in uncomfortable charis so you'll still need something for those times, but try a workout specifically for your back pain, should help make most situations better.

yeah, i went to physical therapy and i have exercises i do every other night. they help a little.

also had anti-inflammatory pills which helped a bit also. but i stopped those because i don't want to be taking them forever.

you ever try a back brace though?

and medical insurance does suck

i injured my back powerlifting (& doing a lot of yard work) & physical therapy was the only thing that worked.

i'm now powerlifting w/o pain (except the normal powerlifting type).

i do have low back pain (I'm 25 year old fit) and lumbar support helps it massively. I don't carry around a cusion but I do sometimes put things like pillows back there. I'm doing my best these days to sleep on my back but frankly I hate that. I love the stomach but believe that stomach sleeping is 75% of my problem since it's muchly gone away since I tried sleeping that way.

First night I tried that literally the next morning 50%+ of my back pain I'd had for the two previous years was gone in an instant. I used to have a problem sitting on the pooper in the morning from pressure at the bottom and I remember that morning (and all mornings since in fact) I can sit there no problem. Maybe a small bit of pain but nothing that takes my breath away. We've also gotten a harder bed but I really did find that sleeping on the floor did an awesome job on my back.

10+ years as an automotive mechanic messed up my back pretty good. Like many others, x-rays showed nothing, yet there were days where I literally could not walk. It was diagnosed as back spasms, which doesn't sound nearly as bad as it felt.

Saw a chiropracter and physical therapist for a while. They taught me a lot about my posture, things that aggrivate it and how to avoid doing them, excercises, stretching, etc...

All of that has helped immensely. But I think the change of career as well as the daily stretches and excercises are the most help.

few times I've bent over an engine compartment I feel it too. Same doing dishes - good excuse, but truly I can't do them for more than a few min without some pain !

I have back problem, I once fell down the stairs and landed on my butt. In addition, I got hit couple times from the back by stupid fvcktards, who used my car as their stopbar. :|

Although I perfer firm beds, every so often after lifting heavy things. I can feel unpleasent feelins from my back.

all sorts of stretching & strengthening (too many to list & too hard to diagram).
the idea seems to be to stop the back muscles from spasm-ing.

when my back was injured i had a hard time brushing my teeth (leaning towards the sink), but the PT took care of all of that. i still drive with a rolled up towel behind my lower back, though, 'cause the therapist pushed "maintaining the lordosis."
