i've had sleeping problems for as long as i remember, it usually takes me an hour or 2 to fall asleep, but it gets worse as i get older, to the point where i dread the "normal" time to go to sleep. tylenol PM doesn't work, nor does benadryl.

some nights i just watch tv or dvds or nef until time to work because it's easier than laying there letting your mind run wild.

take doxylamine succinate... waay stronger than tylenol pm/benadryl(diphenhydramine).
You could get it in unisom sleep tablets, or in nyquil.

Yes - I'm mildly narcoleptic, so its basically a fight I can't win. I sleep when I'm tired, and that's that. If I try to go to bed before I'm tired, I get frustrated, and up being up even later.

how many hours do you average with that method?

Get pills...? Use heavy blankets. Light blankets encourage napping/not sleeping.

Heavy blankets encourage extreme sweating, screw that.

On that on nights that I can't sleep (sundays usually, because I slept in that day), a glass of wine will mellow me out and put me to sleep. Not an every night solution though.

It varies. I get up at 7 - sometimes I fall asleep at 11, sometimes 4. I would say its usually between 1-2....however, another symptom of the narcolepsy is that I have never that I can remember slept a whole night through. If I sleep 6 hours from 1-7, I'll wake up at least 7 or 8 times. So I'm not really getting 6 hours.

edit: and sometimes when I wake up, I can't go back to sleep. Just yesterday I woke up at 4:30 and couldn't go back to sleep...so I ended up just going to work at 6am. At least I got to leave early...

Open a window? I keep my room cold when I go to bed at night. :) You don't have to leave it open all night either... Just open for a little bit before bed and it'll be super chilly in there.

Also I have a fan that blows over me at night, so I stay even chillier. I like having the window open and that fan blowing on me. Nothing feels better.

I'm in the same boat Pilgrim.

I stayed up 'till 7am this morning (yesterday morning I suppose) and made my wife breakfast at 6am. Got up around 2pm later that day.

Alcohol is the culprit in my case I believe.

All I think of when I visit this forum is BACON! If any of you would like to see pics of the grease in the pan, and the actual number of packs I have, just say so!

Unless I'm really tired - like after I worked a 24 hour shift back in March - I usually don't fall asleep right away. Takes minimum of 30 minutes, usually closer to an hour. I hate getting up in the morning though. Of course it is past 2 AM here, you'd think I should have gone to bed a long time ago... drat.

I used to, but it was just because of light. I got curtains that block out 99% of the light from my windows, covered all LEDs, removed all alarm clocks, and got a sleeping mask. Now I can go to bed almost instantly.

I also have cats now, which I think helps.

Have any of you wondered if our increase computer usage somehow is having an effect on us not sleeping? I have just wondered this for some time.

The wife would not approve. I keep it a temperature in the room that allows her to be warm enough with blankets covering her, and me to be comfortable with just a sheet covering me. Anything colder and she'd complain about it being too cold.

Drinking makes me sleep like complete shit, and can even prevent it sometimes (unless I'm -really- lit up). Speaking of lit up though, if you're open to the idea some herbal sleep aid can really help out with this. I haven't used in years though and so I haven't slept well for any legnth of time in years :(

Sometimes the simple solutions are best:

When I can't sleep I just close my eyes and consciously control my breathing, taking slow deep breaths. It puts me out even when I'm on a caffeine rush.
