Anyone else hate Concept Cars?

Manufacturers are so full of, forgive the language, shit when it comes to these things.

They show you a Picasso and then give you fake made by a 4 year old.

ex. FT-86.

I would have bought that thing in a heartbeat if I had the money, now it just looks like another Scion piece of crap.

They irritate me sometimes, but some of them are just so beautiful and clearly never will be made that It's nice to see what the manufacturers would make if they and infinite amounts of money.

Don't they use then to get an idea of the design features that the general public responds to? and I age there have been tonnes of concepts that have been amazing but there actual release is "what there hell happened??"
I haven't seen the non concept ft86... Googling

edit: I dunno dude, I still like it

there are thing that they can do with a concept car that will never fly for a production version for safety and/or manufacturing reasons. There are things in concepts that are just awesome but are just impractical for production. it's one thing to hand build a car and it's completely different on a production line.

concept cars are styling exercises and nothing more.

Agree with OP, they are irrelevant like fashion shows. Let them do it but I hate it when car mags report on a concept design as if it's meaningful at all. Often the car won't even be released to public and invariably if it is it's substantially changed.

I don't hate concept cars, I think they're generally really cool. But frequently they're a bit too wild for general consumption. Despite what 'car guys' might really like. That is the part that is frustrating.

How I wish that had been pursued over the "grinning" Mazda styling...

I still want this.

They should just make a few of the concepts and sell them for ludicrous amounts of money to finance their normal operations. Don't you think collectors would shell out money?

what i find upsetting/disappointing/whatever are concept cars that don't run (most of them). they should be equal parts concept and car.

OP, you're right. "remember that really cool car from 2 years ago? well, here's a piece of junk with a similar name!"

I'm okay with concept cars that are truly concepts. Wild designs with features that you just know would never hit the market. That's fine. They are cool to look at, then you forget about it.

Production models disguised as "concepts" drive me crazy. I think that's what you are talking about. The FT-86 is the perfect example. They almost inevitably get watered down just enough to make you feel disappointed when you see the production car. The Ford Vertrek concept became the new Escape. The Zephyr concept was neutered when it went into production. Pretty much every Honda/Acura...

Those details really add up. Take the concept version -- put on smaller wheels, larger side-view mirrors, lower beltline, remove the chrome/brightwork, etc. Sure the design is the same, but you can't help but feel deflated when you see it in production.

edit: Shout-out to GM for putting the concept Camaro into production verbatim.

I like those cars. The red one looks like a 1 series, and that white one is just plain cool looking.

I don't mind them either. The white "egg" car has some decent curves to it; although, I can understand why someone would think it's too curvy. I wonder if it would look better in a color that doesn't make it resemble an egg. 😛

I like the front end on that car. The lines create a very aggressive look with the headlights, which pretty much resembles someone with a scrunched brow (i.e. an angry face).

I both like them, and dislike the usual watered down production versions. It does look like manufacturing is catching up with some of the ideas as they are looking closer more and more.

It was my fear that they were going to bland out the car from the concept released to the production version, but thankfully they didn't change too much. A few things everyone knew would have to change (mirrors, signal lights) but over all they didn't mess with it much. At least on the exterior. They did "blandify" the interior a bit, in one sense in a good way and in another sense in a bad way. The concept was a bit on the blingy side, but I feel they went a tad bit too far toning it down.

well then, it wasn't concept car to explore style or technology. it was a sneak-peek demo that still got the cost-cutter's scalpel before production.

It was somewhere in between I suppose. I have a few pics of a clay model they had, but it had two front end variations on it (split down the middle). Each side was similar, but it showed they weren't quite done with how they wanted it to be yet. And when people found out about it GM wasn't sure at the time if they really were going to actually produce it yet. It was just a model at the time. The powertrain and suspension was only part way through the design stages, which is partly the reason the concept was shown in 06 and the car wasn't in production until 09.

I was going to post the pic but for some reason I can't find it right now 😕
