i mean how much random shit you get in your search results?

search for micro sd and it just searches for any and all words. i searched for bluetooth earphones and i get wired earphones, headsets, the yuppie bluetooth headset, not to mention bluetooth helicopters, scooters and fuck knows what else.

why does amazons search suck so hard? it's easier to go to other sites ffs :whiste:

I agree.

You'd think a company as huge as Amazon could put together a reliable search engine...not one that "finds" random shit totally unrelated to the search.

Buy.com's search is about as badly borked.

I hate that there is no way to force it to keep or ignore terms -- no "both words" , +must_appear, -must_not_appear, etc.

If I'm looking for something like an iPod 6G battery I don't want 100 listings of 5G batteries that won't work.

Motherboard searches are equally pitiful if you want a specific chipset or form-factor.

I understand the default behavior should work the way it does for when you don't enter the right keywords or enough of them, but there is no power user search for when you need precision.

Not sure if I agree. Never had any trouble finding stuff that I want. Usually you just need to add on more words that describe your wanted item better if you want a more narrow search.

For example I tried "micro sd" and got pages of Micro SD memory cards, which is what I would have expected. If I wanted card readers I would probably have searched "micro sd reader" and if I do that the top results are all readers. Same thing with "bluetooth headsets". Sure, after the first 2-3 pages you get into all kinds of stuff that's not really related anymore, but all the relevant stuff is already in the first 2-3 pages so I don't really have an issue with that.

But it's rare that Amazon beats Newegg's prices...and customer service at Newegg (for me) has always been better than from Amazon...

Rare? Not my experience. I've put together a $1,000 Photoshop PC, a $750 gamer, and two $350 office systems in the last month. Newegg had better prices on one CPU and one PSU. Otherwise, Amazon was the same or lower. CS has always been stellar for me from both retailers.

I have both Prime and Shoprunner, but my Shoprunner trial expires at the end of 2012 and I won't renew it. That gives Amazon a huge edge on Newegg to me, considering two days is more often 'this week' while three days is more often 'next week.' Especially since a lot of Amazon's items ship out of Indiana and Illinois which means I get them in one day instead of two.

Newegg absolutely does have a better selection of hardware.

yeah it sucks. Most amazing to me is that it actually still cannot sort by something as simple as price or even reviews. The sort feature is kind of "this might do something".

I built my current PC in December 2010. I had a shit-ton of Amazon gift cards to use, so that's why I bought parts there. Comparing the prices to Newegg, I would have saved about $200 with Newegg for the same components. (sales and bundle deals) Yes, I used a Prime trial, so I saved about half of the difference in shipping costs...

It sucks so bad and it doesn't have to. I mean, I love Amazon to death, but if you actually want to search it's a absolute SHITFEST.

I could tell it that I want to search a particular department, Sold only by Amazon, Prime Eligible only, and priced from Low to High. But the results will show me items that are from third-party sellers, don't have Prime and the prices are listed at random instead of low to high.

Seriously, WTF?

I never had a problem searching for something on amazon, maybe it's because I normally filter to prime stuff only.

Although it's frustrating at times, I always find what I need in the end. Just takes few more seconds (I know, SUCH a huge deal )

Stupid question, I can never figure out where Sort By Price is (assuming it's even available).

Amazon has great product detail pages but search is horrendous and needs to get better. As others have stated being able to drill down like newegg would be ideal. What i hate is when you search for something and you get 10 results for the same product, why does amazon do that? Is it the SKU or barcode is unique in each?

If you have a name of a product you can find it in amazon, but if you want a HDMI cable or some generic search i feel like the gods roll the dice to see which products you get to view.

not a good example

It's tech search isn't to the level of newegg's, but it uses the 'minus' sign well. It also rocks out the asterisk.

In addition, it let's you add low-high price limits, as well as search for % off by appending any link using "&pct-off=50-99&low-price=5&high-price=25". In addition it has top 100 lists in every category.

So yeah, like you said, Amazon's search is awesome. :)

yeah, its very meh at best.

navigating for the sake of browsing is worse, however.

Agreed - If you don't know exactly what you are looking for it is a huge PITA

It's fine if you already know what you're looking for. But if you're researching a particular "type" of product, it blows donkey balls.

I search and then use the lists on the left to narrow down what I want.

i went into the amazon UK site and searched for micro sd 64GB. the results were insane. i tried +, - etc a while ago but amazon didn't like them. maybe it's ok now, i don't know.

no excuse either way to search for a bluetooth headset and see a scooter and bluetooth helicopter though!

Ofcourse for computer parts I never even look at Amazon, I go straight to Newegg, but for everything else, there is no where to go...
