Mine is only two and half months old but I'll have to come up with something.

It would be nice to have a browser where you could have an "approved site" list the parent could access, and that's all the kids could get to.

I'm sure the kid can get around whatever you throw at him. I mean c'mon, they're kids, just like what we were a decade ago and proxies are easy to use. I recommend just telling the kid not to visit it when other people are around.

This one blocks web searches on proxies and bypassing monitoring. Its pretty effective really.

Just set up a free opendns account. You can set the open dns numbers at the router or on the computer you want to block. Give them a non admin account and you should be set. PW protect all other accounts. I use this along with a keyword list at the firewall level at our k-8 school, as well as at a few small businesses and homes.

My son is only six now, but I'm sure I will probably have to do the same here in a few years.

opendns wont do much, just because you can't resolve a hostname does not mean you can't get to the IP. They'll just use an alternate DNS server.

Best bet is a transparant proxy right at the router. Something like websense but I'm sure there's free alternatives.

If you have the IP numbers you can bypass opendns, but how many kids are going to know those. As far as bypassing opendns, only if they can change the dns numbers. That is the reason for sticking them on a non admin account. If they need something installed they ask for dad's help. That isn't too much to ask. Any body can figure out how to get around any kind of a block, but the whole point is to make it to difficult enough that they won't or to make it obvious that they tried / did.

I used Websense for two years at our school, but opted for opendns when renewel came up. Websense also requires a dedicated server or a high enough end router that supports it. Before going that far for a paid product I would look into net nanny or an equivalent.

Websense can only sniff traffic that passes through the server it installed on, or if it is integrated with a higher end router. It could be bypassed under most cases by using an alternate gateway except when integrated with a gateway router, but only businesses or larger organizations will do that.

Btw, Websense is geared for business use, not home.

Guess best option then is to somehow force traffic through a proxy then block at the proxy (IP / keyword level, not DNS).

Basically you'll want to block most outgoing ports, but at least, 80 and 143 and maybe common proxy ports like 8080, but allow those ports from the proxy server itself. So traffic must go through the proxy server. Ensure routing is disabled so the proxy server can't be used as a gateway, it has to be used as a proxy.

And of course, approach them about it and still watch their use etc...

i always put 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 as my dns servers manually...so that people cant screw with me with opendns.
