Anyone else getting tired of Newshosting.com?

Here in the UK, my ISP has a massive fast link to the US, so before anyone says "oh it's because you're 4000 miles away", not quite.

However, using port 119 some nights means that speeds are all over the place. Switching to 8000/9000 (forces traffic out on a certain peer) returns speeds to normal.

Anyone else getting this?
Is their $14.99/unlimited offer difficult to beat?
Are Giganews really that good?

I get 1100+ KB/s from them. No complaints other than incomplete files quite often. Nothing pars don't fix.

Must admit I'd like better retention. Hmm.

Might have to investigate Giganews then.

When I was using ports 7000-9000 with four connections it fluctuated a lot from 350-450KB/s (sometimes dropping close to zero.) Since I switched to port 119 and 8 simultaneous connections I've been able to consistently max out my pipe (550KB/s).

I do get a lot of incomplete files, but apparently there's a known issue with Supersearch and the headers coming from Giganews. It's annoying to repair the files with Quickpar but it does work at repairing the file(s).

Even with these issues I still think the $14.95/mo plan is better than the equivelant Giganews plan at $24.95 a month. I am a former Giganews customer and enjoyed the service, the value just isn't there for me though.

have always used either ports 7k,8k, or 9k and have no problems

4 connections is enough to max out my whopping 650k download :)

One more thing, I believe Giganews has dedicated servers in Europe and Newshosting does not. You may consider switching for this reason.

I max out my cable connection here in Canada at 6.6Mbps. The only thing I didn't like about Newshosting was that downloading message headers can take forever since each group is done using 1 connection which seems to max out at less than 100KB/s

That's more a limitation of the software than the service. Some newsreaders don't do multithreaded header downloads.

But if downloading headers wasn't limited to that speed per connection, then it wouldn't be a problem ;)
