They're too humorless and solemn to be entertaining. They lack the hysterical overstatement of the recent anti-weed ads:
- buy weed and columbian cartels will kill little children
- buy weed and terrorists will get the last $10 they need to blow up the Statue of Liberty
- smoke weed and you'll shoot your best "bud" in the basement

now that's comedy gold, no stems or seeds!

<-- doesn't smoke either kind

I don't mind them. I like them from a creative and marketing standpoint.

Yeah, Nice marketing. The tobacco companies are pulling their hair out, trying to figure out a new way to ensure smokers keep propagating.. lol

I agree with you though.

i think they are annoying and somewhat misleading. the logic in some of them, well just aren't logical. a lot of the arguments they make in the commercials based off of 1 small bit of info, could be made in parallel fashion against anything else, such as US government.

the one thing i do think is interesting is that they do those type of commercials, knowing full well that it wouldn't be appropriate to for tobacco companies to retaliate with advertising addressing the truth commercials.

It's okay for the logic behind the commercials to not work, since the people they are marketing to are not logical/smart enough to stay away from cigs in the first place...

I like them fine. I like them much better than I like chimps on message boards who think they are clever or rebellious by saying these commercials make them want to smoke.

who pays for it? i hope its not the tax dollars. I think it might be money from the settlements.. if so it is a waste! money should go to schools and not these dumb commercials.

In the settlements against the tabacco companies, part of the money was required to go into advertising against tobacco. Hence, the commercials, the fact that they have the money to close out a city street and stage the fake protests and rallies.

There is also a portion of it that is specifically supposed to go to schools, but the way I see it, the TV ads are better, because more people listen to what is said on TV. I mean, when someone such as a teacher tells you not to do something, chances are, 4 out of 5 kids thinks "Damn, now I gotta do that and find out." and then there is the one goody-goody (which isn't a bad thing) in the group that listens.

But when people watch TV, only a very small percentage of people stop and question what they are watching.

Something's odd when cigarette companies have to run ads telling people how to quit smoking. You don't see the same thing with liquor companies.

What *really* annoys me are those government anti-marijuana commercials where they link pot with terrorism. Especially the one where the two guys in suits are talking and the older, condescending ass uses his sh!tty logic to beat the younger idiot down. Grr...

Cigarette companies should make a "truth" commercial of their own:

Have some fugly person say "The truth people try to stop sales of tobacco."
Show some parts of their pathetic commercials.
Then have the same fugly person say "The truth is sales keep rising."
Then end it with the fugly person yell "OWNED."

Phillip Morris has been running those ones promoting their website and how it has stop smoking information. WTH?? It must be some sort of CYA kinda move.

I don't watch much TV so "the truth" ones don't really bother me because I don't see too many repeats. But the ones that are getting old, they seem to have alot of radio play, are the Priceless ads. That is kinda like saying "you go girl", which is equally old.

see like i just saw commercial where guy puts flowers by make-shift roadside grave. then narrator says 1in3 drivers in accidents were positive for marijuana. what???? 9 out of 10 drivers in accidents were probably right handed...

Actually, that commercial doesn't say 1 in 3 drivers in accidents were tested positive for marijuana, but that's what many people think they said. It says that of the people in accidents that tested positive for drugs, 1 in 3 tested positive for marijuana. So, they are limiting the sample to only people who were using drugs. From that, a third of them used marijuana, but may also have used other mind-altering drugs and/or alcohol, prescription medication, etc.. Perhaps all of those that tested positive for drugs, tested positive for elevated blood-alcohol levels - but you won't hear that mentioned. In essence, they are mentioning a correlation and letting you assume it's a causation. I think it's a sneaky tactic.

That doesn't mean that I'm for smoking and marijana use, I'm just against skewed statistics.

Haha.

blah, I like the commercials, it's creative. So what if it's misleading, if it stops someone from starting to smoke then all the better.

the only thing I hate is the commercial in the public bathroom, and they replaced the urinal cakes with ones that said "Urea is in your pee. It's also in cigarettes."

Yeah, really, and urea is also in beauty and cosmetic products, you manipulating pigs.
