I've been sorta stumped on this issue.. I know the socket thermo-sister(thats tech for hot babe) is not very accurate. but 80F idle is just crazy... thats only 10F over room temp. Under load I max out at 105F. My antec case has the 2 standard rear fans, and a 92mm generic fan in the hard drive cage. I get these readings with the VIA Hardware monitor and with Motherboard Monitor 5. Bios Temperatures usually report higher. about 91F
idle, so im thinking that these programs aren't reading the signal correctly.

any clues??

Well here's my setup. SX1030B with 4 LA1 Panaflos, KT7A-R with a 1GHz Tbird @ 1.2+, Alpha PEP66 with Artic Silver and a 23.5 CFM Sunnon fan, and MBM 5.04 for monitoring. My temps are ~113F at full load using the "thermo-sister" bent up to make sure it's touching the backside. The mobo temp reports 69F with the outside ambient temp of 68F. I don't have a idle temp cause I crack RC5 24/7. The temps in bios seem to be the same as reported MBM5 for me. I don't believe it's running at 113F cause this thing is throwing off some serious heat. I do believe the mobo temp tho cause I had another source measuring the same temp. I would like a thermometer with a thermister to touch the cpu core.

I bent up the sensor to touch the backside of the cpu as well.. even put a small dot of white heatsink goop on it. next question, what fan sensor do you use for CPU in mobo monitor 5??

yep thats the same one im using.. hmmmm...80F seems way low, hell my K6-2 ran in the high 80's to low 90's at its stock speed of 450mhz. I would think a 900@1050 would at least match that temp.. of course this is a much better case than the old one.. it was a no name case.. poor cooling. eh maybe im just nutso.. :)
