Anyone else getting really tempted by the E6400s?

I was all set on the E6600 + Asus P5W DH + Team DDR2-667 3-3-3.

However, availability in Canada seems not likely to happen till late this month or later.

I'm thinkin' of just grabbing an E6400 & seeing how high she'll go, since they are available for $300 CND, $100 less than the E6600s...

Damnit, it's so tempting :p

I'll order a 6400 next week if I couldn't find a 6600 for a reasonable price. I bet 6400 prices will drop to 240$ish. :)

I was heavily considering it today too. But I went back and looked at some benchmarks and I kept telling myself, "Be patient, don't settle for anything less than what you want."

I talk to myself a lot, only sometimes do I answer back.

I'm being tempted by the E6400, but like rklaver said, I'm not going to settle for anything less than a E6600, even if it requires patience.

I've experienced buyers remorse over computer parts in the past, and I'm not going to do it again. Case in point, when I got the Geforce 6800 rather than a 6800GT a couple of years ago was a big pain for me until I got a 7800GT in November, which I then upgraded in march to my X1900XT. The fact that I had gotten an Athlon XP 2600+ rather than an Athlon 64 also made me remorseful.

I'm not going to suffer buyer's remorse this time, though.

I have question! Can you tell me which benchmarks were you looking at. I was looking at gaming and encoding performances. The cpu speed seems to be more important. I'm going to look for some 2Mb vs 4Mb L2 cache benchmarks right now.

I had my heart set on a E6600 but I wanted to finish my system as soon as possible so broke down and bought a E6400 before newegg was out. I am glad considering the E6600's won't be in availability till probably the end of the month and early september, for anything less than $400. Also the E6400's can overclock like crazy, and I intend to put my Scythe Ninja Plus into action. :)

It really is.

Today TechReport came out with a new review.

They have an E6300 vs. X6800 @ E6300 speeds.

And really, the extra cache doesn't help too much.
In some things more than others, obviously.

OMG i just discovered that a local store lists teh Gigabyte DS3 as in stock...

I think if i phone them tomorrow & they have stock on it & the E6400, temptation is going to overcome me

I will have to buy an ethernet card since i need dual LAN, & when UT2k7 comes out, i'm likely gonna be going SLI...but for the meantime...:p

Damnit i think i have convinced myself now :Q

The crappy thing is that i will be leaving for cousin's wedding in Montana from Thurs. - Tues., meaning i'd barely get any time to even rebuild my current system into a C2D one...

And now i am just rambling to myself :p

Perfect! My baord should or I hope to reach 450 FSB with no problem, so 6600 you lose. :)

Where in Canada are you?

Here (Toronto) there seem to be plenty of 6400s too... and I admit that, staring at my P5W DH sitting in its brand new case, it's looking very tempting to pick one of those up instead of waiting for my preordered 6600 from NCIX...

I'm in Edmonton.

I just read on XS someone phoned Memory Express today & they said they have no ETA on any Conroe CPUs.
I'm trying to find out if he asked them for Conroe, or all C2Ds...

I'll phone them tomorrow, as i think getting the DS3 + E6400 might be fun.
Then i'll do another overhaul when UT2k7 comes out, & by then, maybe the nF5 mobos will be out & will OC well? :p

Goddamn i have an upgrading addiction...:(

I was completely considering getting an E6400, but I just got my tracking number for the Retail E6600 that I ordered from xPCgear.com - and an email titled "Your order from eXtremePCgear.com has been shipped." so I'm guessing that I'm going to get my hands on the E6600 that I want either tomorrow or the next day. I'm pretty excited. :) The E6400 does seem like a good alternative though. I know someone who got one, and he is very impressed with the performance.

I'm going through the same thing and after a lot of struggle I decided to give it until next Monday and then make a decision. Worst comes to worst the E6400 will at least be a little cheaper.

Don't worry about talking to yourself; any logical decision is arrived at by a series of points and counter-points weighed against each other so it is only natural that this process will take the form of an internal discussion. That is at least what I tell my self.

I'm happy with the 6400. 3.2Ghz almost at stock settings. System is Prime95 stable, now trying to go down with VCore.

BTW, in my case high Vdim or VCore does not help with o/c. Quite the contrary.

Come to think about it, I may in fact get the E6400 if I could get over the fear of OCing. I've read that it's virtually impossible to damage components when overclocking if you leave the voltage settings alone.

Alright, here's my planned setup when Core 2 Prices go down some:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819115004
Core 2 Duo E6400

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820134046
2GB of Kingston DDR2 667M ram

I was going to go with this mobo, but someone in the reviews said no overclocking options, so I'll leave this for consideration.

Any good OCing mobos?

And how much OCing could I get done with the stock cooler?

Madellga, how come you decided on teh way more expensive (at least in Canada) DQ6 instead of DS3?

SLI support, or in your case, quad SLI capability?
Or something else?

Don't get an Intel mobo...
The DS3 is the cheapest good OCing mobo AFAIK.
You can actually get really high with stock cooler, but things get really hot if vcore is increased too much, whereas a good cooler like a Scythe Ninja will run quiet & cool even with a lotta vcore.

I'd guess that Intel board has zero capability when it comes to OC'ing. Not only that, the layout is too imaginative, to say the least. Tiny CPU socket area (bad for cooling) and wasted bottom-right corner. (where are the front-panel jumpers?) Also why the hell they put TWO PCIE X1 slots there is beyond me.

For a reference, my E6300 did 2.94GHz without a hitch @stock Vcore, and 2.66GHz @1.225V (lowest my board allows)

Went through the exact same dilemma and since the 6400s seem to be hitting about 3.2-3.5GHz, I decided to cancel the 6600 preorder and get an in stock 6400 with a DS3...no regrets.
